Overview of China vs Japan
There are a few main differences between China and Japan, firstly the size of the countries. China is huge with varied landscapes and climates. Japan is much smaller and highly organised. In terms of travel style, China is more flexible and can be a little chaotic while Japan is more structured and efficient.
Ease of Travel: Which Country Is Easier?
There are two main considerations when comparing is China or Japan easier to travel in. The first is the language. In Japan you will find English signage so it will be a little easier to understand however most people will speak only Japanese. In China almost everyone will exclusively speak Mandarin making communication a little harder. Using apps to communicate is common in both countries, Google translate in both and in China We Chat is popular.
Payment systems in Japan are pretty simple, you can use cash or your credit card. In China you will almost exclusively use We Chat or Alipay to pay.
Transport in both is excellent and easy to access and is cheaper in China.
Cost Comparison: Is China or Japan Cheaper?
In almost all categories China is cheaper that Japan. Accomodation in Japan is really expensive comparatively and there aren’t the super cheap (but great quality options) that you will find in China. You will find affordable food options in both and but again China will have cheaper options. Transport is definitely of high quality but far more expensive in Japan. Chinas’ transport system is excellent as well, clean and comfortable but much cheaper. In all categories China is more budget-friendly.
Culture & Experience: Which Feels More Unique?
The experience of travelling the countries is slightly different, China feels less curated and a little more raw. There is a more dramatic ancient and modern extreme. In Japan the cultural experience is polished and organised. Traditions are preserved in a structured manner that feels refined and accessible.
Food: China vs Japan (Which Is Better?)
The food in China varies strongly with different regional flavours eg Sichuan, Cantonese, etc. The rice noodles of Guilin and Yunnan to the soup dumplings of Shanghai and dim sum of Guangzhou.
In Japan the food is high quality and consistent. You will find excellent sushi all around the country. Whilst some regions are known for a darker soy or a more wheat or potato based cuisine they are still more cohesive in type.
Dietary issues (except vegetarian) are similarly difficult in both countries unless eating at expensive and sometimes western influenced restaurants.

Scenery & Landscapes: Which Is More Beautiful?
This comparison is very personal as it will depend heavily on which you prefer. In China the landscape varies from mountains, rivers and undulating hills. In Japan the seasonal beauty is epic, the wintery mountains, the cherry blossoms of spring and autumnal leaves in the fall. Both are stunning and both are worth seeing. There are temples, pretty ancient towns and architecture in both countries. To get a sense of the landscapes check out our pages on Shirakawago in Japan and Yangshuo in China.

Cities: Modern Life Comparison
To compare the cities the fairest comparison is between the largest in both, Tokyo and Shanghai. Tokyo is clean, efficient and futuristic. Shanghai is a fast paced and dynamic global city. Both are clean, easy to navigate and have a busy ‘big city’ atmosphere.
Crowds & Tourism: Which Feels Less Overwhelming?
Japan is very busy with lots of tourism but it is very organised. China can feel a little chaotic at times but is actually more organised than given credit for. It feels like there are definitely more western tourists in Japan than China. In China it is mostly the Chinese people who travel their own country so you just feel like you are in China. The Chinese people in the more rural parts of China love seeing western tourists travelling as well, they often want photos and to try and chat.
Safety: Is China or Japan Safer?
Both China and Japan are very safe, we didn’t feel concerned at any point. There is quite low crime in Japan, China is also safe but uses surveillance systems to make sure of it. Honestly both were no problem for us at all and I wasn’t concerned walking around without Mike in both countries. We actually watched a lady in a Chinese park leave her bag and go to the bathrooms. No one even looked twice at her things and it was perfectly safe.
China or Japan for Different Travel Styles
Travel style is also a personal preference. China will probably suit budget travellers and adventure travellers more. As a first Asian destination or a luxury traveller Japan might be more your style.

Common Mistakes When Choosing Between China and Japan
Some of the most common mistakes people make when choosing between China and Japan is expecting Japan to be cheap, it isn’t and while you can travel there without blowing the bank you will spend more than in China. People often underestimate the travel compelxity of both locations, while it isnt extreme you will need to be prepared that most people don’t speak english and you will need to use translation apps. Payment systems will be slightly different in China and you need to be prepared before you go due to the Great Wall that blocks out the internet. Making sure you have a VPN ready and the apps you need already installed and set up.
