Only Have One Day in Shangri-La? Here’s What to Do

One day in Shangri-La is enough to see the highlights as it is pretty common for Yunnan itineraries to have time constraints. Fitting in somewhere as unique as Shangri-La is worth it for the Tibetan culture, altitude and mountain landscapes. This itinerary is realistic and can be done without rushing.

Quick Itinerary Overview (Save This)

Morning: Monastery + culture

Afternoon: Prayer wheel + viewpoints

Evening: Dinner + sunset

Where Is Shangri-La & Why Visit?

Shangri-La is located in the north of the Yunnan Province, close to Tibetan plateau. It is known for its mountain scenery, monasteries and unique culture.

Important Before You Go (Altitude + Planning Tips)

Shangri-La sits at an elevation of approximately 3,200m which is quite high and can cause altitude sickness in some people. To combat this take it slow on arrival, make sure to stay hydrated and avoid overexertion by doing too much. We have kept this itinerary to the main highlights to help with this. The weather can change quickly here and having a warm jacket and layers that you can put on or off will be best.

1-Day Shangri-La Itinerary (Step-by-Step Plan)

Our 1 day in Shangri-La itinerary is very easy to follow. We have not overpacked it so you can take your time to get around. You will not want to rush here and soaking up the vibe is half of the experience.

Morning: Visit Songzanlin Monastery

Your first stop has to be the largest Tibetan Buddhist monastery in the Yunnan, the Songzanlin Monastery. Often called Little Potala Palace it is a huge place to explore and you would easily take 2-3 hours here. I would pre-purchase tickets and go early so you have the best chance to avoid the biggest crowds. You can’t take photos or videos inside but it is beautiful and peaceful.

Spend some time around the monastery, there are lots of photo opportunities and you can meander around at a slower pace to acclimatise to the altitude before heading into the main part of town.

Afternoon: Wander Dukezong Ancient Town

Spend the rest of the day in Dukezong Ancient Town which is the main part. You will find traditional Tibetan-style architecture and a more rustic vibe. There is a laid back atmosphere and streets filled with cafés, snacks and shops. Think ‘relaxed exploration’.

Late Afternoon: Spin the Giant Prayer Wheel

This was actually my favourite part of our quick visit to Shangri-La, visit Guishan Park and see the giant prayer wheel. This is one of the largest prayer wheels in the world and it is incredibly heavy to try and turn, you need a group of about 20 people to be able to turn it. We were told by a local that you jump in and turn it 3 times clockwise and by the time you finish your turn then you should have finished your prayers. It is a short uphill walk from the plaza below and there are some temples to walk around also. It is a great cultural experience as well, lots of locals were stopping us asking to take pictures and the views across the countryside were beautiful.

Evening: Sunset + Dinner

During sunset you can get nice views from the prayer wheel or walk the town and get some local Tibetan-style food. Yak hot pot is popular and so is the butter tea. Have a nice relaxed end to the day so you are not tiring yourself too much.

Where to Stay in Shangri-La (Best Area for One Night)

Even though the Dukezong Old Town is a little way from the train station I would still choose to stay there so you are close to the main things to do and it is really walkable. There are some great accommodation options here and lots of restaurants. Seeing the prayer wheel at night is possible easily from here also.

How to Get to Shangri-La

Shangri-La is relatively easy to get to, from Lijiang it is about 2–3 hours by train. You can also take a private driver, get a Didi but that will be a more expensive option. If you don’t have time to go there and stay you can take a day trip from Lijiang and combine it with Tiger Leaping Gorge. There is also an airport near the town that you can fly into.

What to Pack for Shangri-La (Don’t Forget This)

You will need a couple of extra things to visit Shangri-la, even in summer it is colder here:

What to Skip If You Only Have One Day

If you only have one day in Shangri-La then I would skip long-distance nature trips to the national park and overloading your itinerary with any big things. I would definitely not do any high-altitude hikes on your first day there as you will be adjusting to the altitude.

Is One Day in Shangri-La Enough?

One day in Shangri-La is enough to see the highlights. Ideally you would stay a minimum of 2 days in Shangri-La as to get to move at a slower pace and see as much as possible. It is not enough if you want to cover a lot of ground or slow travel and soak up the Tibetan vibes.

What to do if you have more than one day in Shangri-La?

If you have a couple of extra days in Shangri-La then I would head out to Potatso National Park to check it out. This tour includes transport which is really helpful as it is a little out of town. There is also Meili Snow Mountain National Park which has a beautiful sunrise golden view (which is hard to see but you can try!) this tour takes you there to try and see it and then to other locations and viewpoints.

Shangri-La Travel Tips No One Tells You

This is what we wished we knew before we went to Shangri-La:

  • Oxygen levels can affect energy – the high altitude can make you feel tired, drained and sleepy.
  • Weather changes quickly – it can be warm one minute and rainy the next, wear layers and be prepared for anything!
  • It feels very different from the rest of China, we loved this! It feels really rural and rustic because of how close to the Tibetan border it is.
  • Take a personal oxygen tank in case you need it and go slower than you think, this will help you acclimatise to the altitude.
