Which Town Is Better for First-Time Mexico Visitors?
For first time Mexico travellers we recommend Sayulita as their base due to the easier transport options, more restaurants and tour options. It is much easier for nervous travellers as there is more infrastructure for tourists. San Pancho is calmer, quieter which can be less overwhelming. If you are used to travelling then you might prefer the peace of San Pancho.

Sayulita is known for its surf town vibe, cool cafes, strong taco scene and bustling nightlife. As Sayulita is more developed it is a perfect digital nomad destination with more tourist infrastructure than San Pancho. Although it is busier it adds to the vibrant atmosphere of the town. There are lots of tours you can do easily from Sayulita as well as things to do in Sayulita.

San Pancho is known for its quieter atmosphere, boutique hotels, yoga & wellness, calmer beaches, epic sunsets and a more local atmosphere. Almost like an older, more relaxed version of Sayulita.

Beaches: Which Has Better Beaches?
Both Sayulita and San Pancho have beaches right at the heart, with easy access from town. Here you will find some of the most popular beaches of the Riviera Nayarit.
Sayulita Beach
Sayulita has a great surfing beach that has a lively, vibrant atmosphere from morning to evening. With surfers in the water, beach vendors on the sand and music from nearby bars with toursits gathering for sunset it can feel a little crowded in peak season. The water colour is a blue/brown and the sand is a little darker too. The waves are small which is great for beginner surfers and while we were there we saw a lot of birds in the water which was interesting to watch.
San Pancho Beach
San Pancho is wider and quieter with more peaceful and better sunset views, although the beach is a little less swimming-friendly at times. It gets busy at sunset with people coming to watch the spectacle, the best spot in the area. The water colour is more blue than at Sayulita but the waves are a little bigger for more experienced surfers. We saw the same birds on the water here as at Sayulita and the sand was slightly lighter.
Which Town Has Better Sunsets?
San Pancho has the best sunsets in the Rivera Nayarit! Here the sweeping panorama view highlights the beautiful sunset unlike at Sayulita where the mountains block the view. Arrive about 30 minutes before sunset to catch the earliest part of the sunset and stay for about 20 minutes after sunset as the afterglow is worth it. There are mosquitos at this time of day so bring bug spray. If you prefer to view it with a drink then head to La Tarraya.

Best Areas to Stay Sayulita:
In Sayulita you can stay in the noisier centre, the hillside for views but a steep access or you can stay at our perfect hotel on the north end. It may sound like it is too far from the centre but it was extremely walkable. This really is the perfect mid-range choice in Sayulita. It is perfect for couples, families and digital nomads. Honestly I think everyone would be happy here!
Best Areas To Stay San Pancho:
In San Pancho you can stay on the beachfront at jungle boutique stays or in the central plaza area. San Pancho is quieter in general and a little more boutique with stays that often have a wellness focus. These are our top picks for San Pancho:,
Best Luxury Hotel: PAL.MAR Hotel Tropical is more like a luxury boutique hotel that is often described as an oasis.
Best Boutique Hotel: Hotel Casa San Pancho is a very popular hotel in San Pancho. It includes breakfast and has an authentic, wooden style aesthetic.
Best Budget Stay: Casa Cora is very affordable and in a great walkable location. The rooms are clean and have character.
Food Scene Comparison
Sayulita Food Scene
Sayulita has a strong food scene with lots of taco stands and menus full of smoothie bowls and good coffee at trendy cafes. There is international food available at restaurants as well as seafood but we couldn’t go past the excellent Mexican flavours at our favourite taco spots! Some of the best restaurants in Sayulita are the local stalls. We fell in love with a great and cheap taco stand that cooked up the best birria tacos we’ve ever tried.
San Pancho Food Scene
The San Pancho food scene is a little quieter and smaller but high quality, there is a lot of farm to table restaurants. When you look at where to eat in San Pancho there will be good quality but fewer choices.
Nightlife Comparison
Sayulita nightlife
Sayulita is full of bars, live music and a vibrant party atmosphere. Nights can be noisy for those staying right in the centre (check our best accommodation option for Sayulita with quiet nights in the centre!). If you are looking for a night life scene then Sayulita will suit you.
San Pancho nightlife
San Pancho has a quieter vibe, with low-key evenings and lazy beach dinners. There is a slower pace here and it is pretty peaceful.
Which Is Better for Couples?
San Pancho advantages
San Pancho has quieter hotels and a less chaotic, more romantic vibe. The slow pace and lazy mornings really help to emphasise the relaxed atmosphere. Think quiet mornings and sunset strolls along the beach followed by romantic dinners.
Sayulita advantages
At Sayulita there is a more electric vibe, even on the beach. There is a bigger selection of restaurants but they will be busier and more social. There are secluded beaches to walk to from Sayulita which is a nice little escape from the centre. It is easier to do tours & day trips from Sayulita as well so a luxury boat cruise is on the cards for couples looking for an activity.
Which Is Better for Families?
Sayulita is more convenient, walkable with lots of restaurant options and tours from here. It is noisier at night (unless you stay at this hotel!). The beach is swimmable and very long to walk along. San Pancho is calmer, quieter and runs at a slower pace. It really depends on what your family prefers as to which suits best.
Which Is Better for Digital Nomads?
Sayulita
Sayulita has excellent co-working spaces, cafes and a stronger expat scene. It is quite easy to be a digital nomad here. The wifi can be patchy but it is possible to get a good strong connection.
San Pancho
There is less infrastructure and a slower pace in San Pancho. It is a quieter location for working from but also has a more challenging wifi connection at times.
Which Town Has Better Wifi?
Sayulita generally has a better co-working quality with great cafe wifi and hotel wifi available. However outages are common and it can’t always be relied on. The best option is for a hotel with a star link set up, we stayed in Sayulita and had no problem with wifi at our hotel.
Day Trips & Tours
Sayulita advantages:
It is easier to access tours such as taco tours and surf lessons when staying in Sayulita. There are more frequent Puerto Vallarta connections which make it simpilier to get around the area.
San Pancho:
Staying in San Pancho is more of a relaxation-focused experience. There are still tours available, however you will possibly need to get to Sayulita to get to them.
Can You Stay in One and Visit the Other?
Staying at either Sayulita or San Pancho and visiting the other is the best thing to do as they are only located about 15 mintues away. The local bus is cheap and easy to use, you can’t go wrong. There are also taxis available although more expensive. Uber doesn’t really work in this area, we did try and wait for an Uber but they never arrive and it just wastes a lot of time. Golf carts can not be taken outside of the main Sayulita area, scooter or car rental is possible but really not needed as the buses are cheap and good. We chose to stay at Sayulita and visit San Pancho which worked perfectly for us.
Cost Comparison
We found accomodation prices in Sayulita slightly cheaper overlal because there are more hostels and mid-range hotels available. San Pancho felt more boutique focused with many properties leaning towards wellness travellers. You can find cheap food options in any town, in both Sayulita and San Pancho food ranges from $2USD for a street taco to ~$100 USD for a meal in a restaurant. Transport is a little more expensive in San Pancho as you have less traffic and further to go for most things.
Safety Comparison
Both towns felt safe during our visit, even when walking around at night. Like most tourist destinations in Mexico, petty theft and opportunistic pickpocketing can happen, especially on busy beaches, so it’s still important to keep an eye on your belongings.

Final Verdict: Which One Did We Prefer?
If we returned to the Riviera Nayarit tomorrow we would personally stay in Sayulita again because we loved the energy, food scene and easy access to tours and things to do. If we were planning a quieter relaxing couples getaway we would book San Pancho for the quiet mornings, slow sunset beach walks and relaxing dinners.

Yes, San Pancho is much less crowded than Sayulita. In fact it is often referred to as Sayulita’s younger cousin.

San Pancho is about 7km and 15 minutes from Sayulita.
Is Sayulita too touristy?
Sayulita is more touristy than San Pancho but not overly so. It still has a coastal bohemian charm to it that we haven’t found anywhere else. The most similar town we can think of would be Tulum centre.
Which town is better for surfing?
Sayulita has smaller waves and is better for beginner surfers whereas San Pancho is better for more experienced surfers with bigger and faster waves.
Is San Pancho safer than Sayulita?
San Pancho feels slightly safer than Sayulita as it is smaller and more community focused. While we didn’t feel too concerned at either town it is best to use your usual travel safety procedures and keep an eye on your belongings.
Can you day trip between them?
