Yunnan Packing List: What to Pack for Every Season (2026 Guide)

by Kelly

What to Pack for Yunnan Province (Quick Answer)

The Yunnan province is in the western part of China and there are a few things I would always carry-if you are short on time these are the essentials:

Why Packing for Yunnan Is Tricky (Don’t Make These Mistakes)

The Yunnan can be tricky to pack for because you are dealing with multiple climates in one trip. Add to this the altitude changes (e.g. altitude gain of approximately 1,400m from Dali to Shangri-La) and the extra strong sun (even in cooler weather) and big day-to-night temperature drops. It makes it an area you have to have a little of everything ready. However we managed to do this region in November and didn’t have to bring too much extra from our usual packing. It is possible.

Yunnan Weather by Region (What This Means for Packing)

Each part of the Yunnan has a slightly different climate, making it a little more difficult to pack for. This is the general climate you can expect in each place.

  • Kunming = mild “spring-like” climate
  • Dali = breezy, lakeside conditions
  • Lijiang = cooler, higher altitude
  • Shangri-La = coldest, alpine climate

The idea is to pack for variety, not the actual destination. You need things to you can add in to make yourself more comfortable.

The Ultimate Yunnan Packing List (Complete Checklist)

This is the complete list of what I would pack to visit the Yunnan Province, most of it can be used at other locations around China so it is not too ‘Yunnan specific’. Unless you are visiting in Winter and then will need snow approriate clothing.

Clothing Essentials

Footwear

Weather Protection

High-Altitude Essentials (Most People Forget This)

These travel essentials are really important for the high altitude regions like Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and Shangri-La.

Tech & Travel Essentials for China

The basic technical things you will need are:

  • Power adapter (China plug types)
  • Portable charger (it is essential that the portable battery charger you bring has the CCC certification on it or they will confiscate it at airports. They 100% do check it, we actually had to post it to our hotel in the next town on one occasion when we were flying domestically)
  • VPN considerations
  • Apps:
    • Amaps, Google Translate & We Chat and AliPay and WeChat for payment apps. Check out our China Travel Guide for all of these tips and more.

Toiletries & Health Items

These are the usual basics you would take on most trips, with some oxygen added in!

  • Basic first aid kit and your personal medications
  • Motion sickness patches or tablets (mountain roads)
  • Hand sanitiser
  • Personal hygiene items + tissues (at times these pocket packs are useful as there is no toilet paper in some public toilets)
  • personal oxygen tanks – you can buy these in Lijiang and it is a good idea to take them to Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and Shangri-La with you as they can help with the altitude.

What to Wear in Yunnan by Season

These are the things you will wear in the Yunnan area by season, so you can find when you are going and see if there is something extra you would like to take.

Spring (March–May)

  • Light layers + jacket – this time of year is mild and easy to travel without needing too much extra.

Summer (June–August)

  • Breathable clothing + rain protection – you will encounter a little rain so having an umbrella or rain coat will be really helpful.

Autumn (Sept–Nov)

  • Ideal weather → light layers – we were here in November and I did use my light rain jacket as a warm layer in the early mornings and evenings. I also used my beanie and gloves.

Winter (Dec–Feb)

  • Warm layers + coat – there will be snow in the higher altitude regions so a snow jacket and boots will be useful.

What NOT to Pack for Yunnan

The Yunnan area does require some transportation to move around so overpacking is never helpful. We went with a medium sized suitcase and it was perfect. You don’t need too many “fashion” outfits, this area is more ‘outdoorsy’. There will be people dressing up in local costume (you can hire it in each town) and getting lots of photos. High heels are incredibly impractical in this area as you will be walking on cobblestones and in the countryside. I would avoid taking too much cold-weather gear, one good jacket and a couple of jumpers is all I needed for a few weeks in the Yunnan. You may want a proper snow jacket if heading to Shangri-La and Jade Dragon Snow Mountain.

Packing Tips for Yunnan Travel (No One Tells You This)

Helpful hints for your Yunnan packing list are you’ll walk more than expected, transportation is easy but you still get a lot of steps in! Laundry is easy to access, at pretty much every hotel we stayed at there were washing machines available to use and dryers as well. It will be easier for you if you pack light making getting on and off trains easier. Even in summer the early mornings can feel cold, being prepared for chilly mornings is key.

Packing for a Yunnan Itinerary (1–2 Weeks)

Keep your luggage to a minimum and pack versatile layers that you can match with other pieces. Be prepared for changing climates and temperatures. Focus on comfort over style and don’t forget about the higher UV at atlitude.
