We stayed one night in Dujiangyan while travelling between Xi’an and Chengdu, and it turned out to be one of the most unusual stops on this part of our China trip.
Rather than rushing through on a traditional Chengdu day trip, we arrived with enough time to explore Guanxian Ancient City, see the giant panda installation at Yangtianwo Square and stay until after dark for Dujiangyan’s famous โBlue Tears.โ The following morning we visited Panda Valley before continuing to Chengdu.
Staying overnight worked well because we could enjoy Dujiangyan after dark without worrying about a return train and then reach Panda Valley early the following morning to be one of the among the first to enter and see the pandas.
In this guide we’ll show you exactly how we organised our stay, where we stayed, what the Blue Tears are actually like, how Panda Valley compares with the main Chengdu Panda Base and whether we’d stay overnight or visit Dujiangyan as a day trip next time.

| Ideal time | One night if Blue Tears + pandas are priorities |
Our quick recommendation: Dujiangyan absolutely works as a Chengdu day trip, but we’d stay one night again if Panda Valley and the Blue Tears were both priorities. The overnight stay let us enjoy the city after dark and visit the pandas the following morning without cramming everything into one very long day.
Is Dujiangyan Worth Visiting?
Yes โ it is particularly worth it if you want something different from another large Chinese city. We loved the small-city feel of Dujiangyan especially after a big city like Xi’an. Wandering the ancient streets during the day and then in the evening as the lanterns light up as well as seeing the famous illuminated blue river was so pretty. It felt a little touristy but far less than other places we have been. One night felt like the perfect amount of time to see the ancient town, Blue Tears and then visit Panda Valley.
Worth adding if:
- Panda Valley is important;
- Blue Tears appeals to you;
- you want a slower stop between bigger cities.
Possibly skip if:
- you already have a packed Sichuan itinerary;
- you have only 1โ2 days total for Chengdu;
- you’re already visiting several panda facilities.

Would We Follow the Same Itinerary Again?
Yes, we would. Our main aim was to be at Panda Valley first thing to see the pandas at their most active. Our arrival into Dujiangyan was as early as we could manage from Xi’an and we decided to go straight there before Chengdu rather than getting to Chengdu and having to take another train out there and back. We had plenty of time to walk the ancient town area and visit the giant panda statue in town.
For us, the overnight stay was worthwhile as it allowed us to wander the ancient town in the early evening and see the Blue Tears without worrying about a return train. We were then able to get up early and be some of the first in line to see the pandas at their most active time.
If we had been able to arrive earlier in the day we would have fitted in the Dujiangyan Irrigation System as it does require at least a half day to visit all the sites there.

How We Travelled from Xi’an to Dujiangyan
We decided to go straight from Xi’an to Dujiangyan as we wanted to spend a night there and figured we would just do it before Chengdu. We booked a train from Xi’an North Railway Station (also known as Xi’anbei) that had a transfer at Chengdu East (Chengdudong) before arriving in Dujiangyan.
Xi’an North Railway Station โ Chengdu East Railway Station โ Dujiangyan Railway Station
Arriving at the Xi’an North Railway Station was really easy, it was large but there was a lot of signage to assist and the staff are always more than happy to help direct you. Passing through security was really easy, just put your bags through a scanner and get scanned yourself, the lines weren’t too long early in the morning. We found our check-in gate and lined up in the lane where there is a person to scan your passport rather than the ID scanning machines, you will usually find it on the left or right-hand side of the lanes.
Transfer
The transfer at Chengdu East (Chengdudong) Railway Station was very simple and easy, 25 minutes was enough for us to change platforms and re-board the next train.
The train to Dujiangyan Railway Station departed at 1:37pm and we arrived by 2:55pm. Our ticket cost 387.08CNY / US$57.75 including booking fees per person, we chose a second-class seat and it was very spacious and comfortable, trains in China are very well organised and clean. We had our two Osprey 40L backpacks and two small day bags and both were able to fit in the overhead luggage storage rack.
We stayed in a hotel right in the centre of the ancient town but honestly if we had to redo this trip we would choose one within walking distance from the other train station in Dujiangyan which is called Lidui Park Station. That station is walkable to the hotel area and much closer to the ancient town. I have added more information on our hotel choice below.
Regardless, the Dujiangyan Railway Station was no problem at all to arrive at, we disembarked, walked to the exit and turned left to reach the road. There were restaurants and shops here for refreshments and storage lockers where you can leave your bags if you are doing a day trip or stopover.
We called a Didi and a ride to the ancient town area took 21 minutes and cost us 11.4CNY / US$1.70. Cars can’t go all the way into the ancient area so we walked in the rest of the way to the hotel.

Where We Stayed in Dujiangyan
We stayed in the scenic area at Tianjiao Fengyin Hotel (Nanqiao Store, Dujiangyan Scenic Spot). The hotel looked great on paper because the location was right inside the ancient town, but in reality it wasn’t as nice as the images or reviews made it seem and was incredibly hard to find.
We were lost trying to find it and a local lady stopped to help us, she also couldn’t find it. After calling the hotel twice they came and walked us to the entry which was hidden in a side street and up an unmarked elevator. Our room was fine, just not as nicely finished as expected and a little dated. The views from the patio were great but the whole area felt a little ramshackle. We didn’t have breakfast but weren’t really upset about it either. It was a comfortable bed and a quiet stay even though it was right in the middle of the ancient area.
In all honesty, I wouldn’t recommend this hotel. It was not really up to standard and made our stay more difficult than it needed to be. If we returned we would choose to stay at a hotel a little outside the main ancient street area as it is only a short walk in and very close to the second train station called Lidui Park Station, which we would also choose to arrive at.
If we returned, we would choose to stay at the Holiday Inn Dujiangyan Ancient Town by IHG based on its location, only 180 m from Lidui Park Station and 920 m from the Blue Tears, its facilities and recent guest reviews. We also like that breakfast is optional so you aren’t missing out if you decide to have an early-morning start at Panda Valley.

Yangtianwo Square and the Giant Panda Statue
I really loved the giant panda statue, it is so much bigger than you think it is going to be! The enormous reclining selfie panda is pretty funny and then you get the crowds around it taking photos with it, the vibe is fun and everyone is in a good mood. Make sure you take a photo from the side so you get the face and phone and check it out from the top so you can see the scale. We spent about 15 minutes here just taking pictures and watching the scene. The panda is within easy walking distance of the ancient town entrance and is worth visiting if you are in the area.

Guanxian Ancient City โ Exploring Dujiangyan After Arriving
We visited Guanxian Ancient City and spent a few hours wandering the area into the evening. The ancient area is actually really big so you do need a few hours if you want to see as much as possible. There are loads of snacks and restaurants that you can eat at, pedestrian streets filled with shops and interesting architecture.

The streets are busy, the atmosphere is pretty upbeat and it feels like there is something happening in all parts. We found the entry to hike up the mountain and temples as we walked. It was really nice just strolling around and taking it all in. I definitely think it is worth visiting if you have time, even without the irrigation system.

Make sure to see the Nanqiao Bridge, which is really pretty by day to see the architecture and by night to see it all lit up with lanterns and the blue water. It gets really busy so be prepared!

Dujiangyan Blue Tears โ What They’re Actually Like
I have to be honest, the โBlue Tearsโ are a lighting effect on the river, rather than natural bioluminescence. I wasn’t sure what to expect when we went, but I wasn’t expecting it to be just lighting. We walked to the Nanqiao (South) Bridge in the evening and strolled along the river towards the ancient city gates. In the evening there are lots of people walking across the bridges and taking pictures of the blue water. We made sure we were near the river by 7:45pm to see the lights turn on around 8:30pm, as the sky got darker the blue becomes stronger. The strongest effect is around the bridges, which are the best place to see the water.
Where Is the Dujiangyan Blue Tears View?
There were definitely a lot of people around but you could find space to see the river clearly. The best viewpoint we found wasn’t the Nanqiao Bridge but the Tianfuyuan Bridge. Walk to the side where the water rushes underneath it and watch from there, it makes an incredible scene!
What Time Do the Blue Tears Start?
When we visited in August, we began seeing the full effect at around 8:30pm. By then it was dark enough that the lights were stronger. We stayed about an hour walking up and down looking at the river, bridges and lights in the evening. We found a food truck area with a stage, there was a game with some music happening and people were winning free drinks. Mike grabbed some skewers here and a beer at a big fridge/tap in the centre, it was such an interesting concept, pay for the beer you want then fill your own glass. It was a lot of fun.
Are the Dujiangyan Blue Tears Worth Seeing?
Yes, if you are interested in visiting an ancient town with this unique feature, we found it to be a lot of fun, you don’t need to turn up at the river too early. It will be crowded but there will be space to get photos.

Why Staying Overnight Worked So Well
Staying overnight meant we didn’t spend the Blue Tears experience watching the clock for a return train. We could explore after dark, sleep locally and head to Panda Valley the next morning. We spent our evening wandering the lantern-lit streets of the ancient town and admiring the blue river and eating and drinking at the street food area instead of rushing to the train station or constantly checking the time.

Panda Valley Dujiangyan โ Our Morning Visit
One of the main reasons we stayed overnight was so we could visit Panda Valley the following morning rather than squeezing the pandas into the end of an already busy day. We wanted to be among the first people lined up to get in. On our August 2026 visit, the gates opened at 7:30 am. Opening hours can change, so check the current Panda Valley hours when booking, we planned to be there at 7am to be super early.
We left our hotel and got a Didi at 6:47am, arriving at the Panda Valley entry at 6:56am which cost 11.2CNY / US$1.67. Walking through the first entry to the line-up and were completely surprised to see there were already about 20 people in the line up, we weren’t the only ones who wanted to be early! We joined the queue and waited, the gates were opened exactly on time and half of the queue ran to store their bags at the entry. We walked up to the next entry point, scanned our passports which registered our tickets and we were in. It was very fast and seamless. You need to pre-purchase your tickets to Panda Valley online prior to your arrival as they do sell out and there is nowhere at the entry to buy a ticket onsite, there are actually signs saying this.

Entering Panda Valley
From the entry we walked up a slight hill to the first panda enclosure. The park is set in a really beautiful, lush, landscaped garden. It feels natural to the area and is very well kept. There are about 12 giant pandas at Panda Valley they have lovely lush enclosures. On our visit, the pandas were very active when we arrived and several began settling down to sleep around 9 am. That made the early start worthwhile for us.
We saw about 9 giant pandas total and while some were sleeping towards the end of the morning there were about 6 that were actively eating, scratching and moving. We were absolutely mesmerised watching them, I think they’re so cute. Because Panda Valley is a little smaller it feels like you’re closer to the pandas and can see them better but I honestly don’t know if that is true or just how it feels when you are there.
We also saw three red pandas which were running around the trees in their area, they are free-roaming so can decide where they want to explore.
The whole Panda Valley area was lovely, it felt relaxed and was really beautifully designed. There were good toilet facilities and cafes or restaurants to buy food and drinks inside the park as well as outside. We stayed for about 3.5 hours before calling a Didi and heading back to Dujiangyan to pick up our bags and get the train to Chengdu.
Arriving early in the morning for a panda visit is the best thing to do, you get to see them at their most active time. We loved the first panda we saw, it was just happily eating bamboo and relaxing. I would absolutely come back to visit Panda Valley again.

Panda Valley vs Dujiangyan Panda Base โ Don’t Confuse Them
Panda Valley and the Dujiangyan Panda Base are not the same attraction. They are two different places and the Dujiangyan Panda Base closed down for renovations in April 2026 and as of October 2026 still remains closed.
Panda Valley vs Chengdu Panda Base: Which Should You Visit?
It really depends on your preference, if you have only a couple of days in Chengdu the Chengdu Panda Base would make the most sense as it is closer to town and easier to access. However, if you have 4-5 days in Chengdu then you could definitely do a trip to the Panda Valley either as an overnight stay or a day trip.
Panda Valley vs Chengdu Panda Base
| Features | Panda Valley | Chengdu Panda Base |
|---|---|---|
| Setting | Lush, jungle landscaping in the mountains | More like a large zoo-style set up, lots of big enclosures |
| Crowds | Much quieter when we visited | Much busier when we visited |
| Number of pandas | About 12 giant pandas | Many more pandas overall |
| Red pandas | About 20 free-ranging red pandas | Large red-panda population |
| Walking | Easy, slight uphill | Much bigger, up hill, shuttle available |
| Size | Approx 140 hectares | Approx 238 hectares |
| Best for | A quieter experience | Seeing more pandas, very close to Chengdu |
| Our preference | If you have the time we prefer Panda Valley | If you only have a couple of days in Chengdu this is the best option. |
Panda Valley to Chengdu โ How We Continued Our Trip
Once we were finished at Panda Valley we called a Didi which picked us up at 11:02am and took 7 minutes to get back to Dujiangyan and cost 10CNY / US$1.49. We grabbed our bags and called another Didi at 12:16pm, it took 20 minutes back to Dujiangyan Railway Station and cost us 10.10CNY / US$1.51.
We went inside, getting scanned and boarded our train at 12:52pm to Xipu which cost 10CNY / US$1.49. The train was really quick we arrived at Xipu Railway Station at 1:12pm where we caught a Didi to the ibis Hotel Chengdu Taikoo Li/Chunxi Road. The Didi only took 43 minutes to the city and cost 22CNY / US$3.29. Xipu Station looks like it is really far from the city but using Didi is so cheap and easy it really doesn’t matter.

Can You Visit Dujiangyan as a Day Trip from Chengdu?
Yes. We didn’t personally visit Dujiangyan as a day trip from Chengduโwe arrived from Xi’an and stayed overnightโbut after travelling through Dujiangyan ourselves, it’s clear that a day trip is completely possible.
How We’d Do a Dujiangyan Day Trip
While this is not the exact itinerary we followed personally, we would structure a realistic route to do Dujiangyan as a day trip like this:
Chengdu โ Panda Valley โ Yangtianwo / ancient town โ Blue Tears if staying late โ Chengdu
If you are interested in the irrigation system and want to visit it, swap or extend the ancient-town portion to include the irrigation system, but doing Panda Valley + full irrigation system + ancient town + Blue Tears creates a very long day. I would consider a day trip that includes both so all the organisation is already done for you.
DIY vs Dujiangyan Tour from Chengdu
| DIY | Organised Tour | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Lower | Higher |
| Planning | More | Minimal |
| Train required | Usually | No |
| Hotel pickup | No | Often |
| Panda Valley | Easy | Package dependent |
| Ancient town | Easy | Package dependent |
| Blue Tears | Easy if staying late | Only certain tours |
| Irrigation System | Optional | Often included |
| Flexibility | Excellent | Fixed |
| Best for | Independent travellers | First China visit / limited time |

Other Things to Do in Dujiangyan We Didn’t Visit
There are a couple of things we had on our list to do but ran out of time for. Wewould fit these in if we had another day or could arrive earlier on the first day.
Dujiangyan Irrigation System
The Dujiangyan Irrigation System is the city’s most famous historic attraction, but we didn’t visit it during this trip. We prioritised the ancient city, Blue Tears and Panda Valley instead, so we can’t give you a first-hand review.
If the irrigation system is a priority for you, allow several hours and consider either extending your stay or replacing part of our itinerary rather than simply squeezing it in. It does require a ticket for entry, there are a lot of sights to see once inside. If you are thinking of including it in your day trip I would seriously consider a tour that will have the timing and organisation done for you so you don’t miss anything.
Zhongshuge Bookstore
We didn’t visit Zhongshuge on this trip, but it is another popular stop near Dujiangyan Rongchuang Cultural Tourism City. It looks like a cool place to visit and we would love to stop by on another trip.
Mount Qingcheng
If you have a couple of nights in Dujiangyan then hiking at Mount Qingcheng would be lovely, it is one of the four Taoist mountains in China. You could spend from 3 hours to 7 hours walking and hiking here depending on where you go.

What We’d Do Differently Next Time
We’d Arrive Earlier
On our next visit to Dujiangyan we would try to arrive earlier so we had a full day to fit in the irrigation system as well as the old town areas.
We Wouldn’t Use The Dujiangyan Train Station
We’d make sure to book our tickets to Lidui Park Railway Station which is closer to town and more functional.
We Would Stay at a Different Hotel
For our visit, we stayed right in the centre of the ancient town but it didn’t make sense once we were there, I would book the Holiday Inn Dujiangyan Ancient Town by IHG next time, it is closer to the Lidui Park Train Station and an easy walk to the old town.
Make Sure to Spend More Time in the Ancient Town
The ancient town area is huge, we didn’t have enough time to wander every alleyway, another hour would have been great!
We’d Position Ourselves Differently for the Blue Tears
We started up at the main bridge, Nanqiao Bridge, and it was really busy. I would spend more time by the Tianfuyuan Bridge which is still busy but the view is better.
Book Panda Valley Earlier
The Panda Valley tickets can sell out and you can’t buy tickets at the gate. I would absolutely buy them as soon as you know when you are going so that you don’t miss out!
Would We Stay Overnight Again?
Yes! It was great to wander around the town area in the evening without stressing about catching a train or the time. I would only do it if I had multiple days for Chengdu though.

How Much Did Our Dujiangyan Overnight Trip Cost?
These are the actual costs we paid to go to Dujiangyan, of course these prices are better if you are travelling as two people as the Didi and hotel is shared between two. You just need to add on the extra train and attraction ticket.
| Expense | Per person |
|---|---|
| Xi’an โ Dujiangyan train | 387.08CNY / US$57.75 |
| Station โ hotel | 11.4CNY / US$1.70 |
| Hotel | 408.22 / US$61 |
| Dinner/snacks | 66.92 CNY / US$10 |
| Panda Valley transport | 11.2CNY / US$1.67 |
| Panda Valley ticket | 77.09CNY / US$11.52 |
| Panda Valley โ hotel | 10CNY/US$1.49 |
| Hotel โ Station | 10.10CNY / US$1.51 |
| Dujiangyan โ Xipu Station | 10CNY / US$1.49 |
| Xipu Station โ ibis Chengdu | 22CNY / US$3.29 |
| Total | 1,014.01 CNY / US$151.42 |
Would a Chengdu Day Trip Be Cheaper?
Yes, a DIY day trip would be cheaper as there would be no hotel to pay for and the transport would be the same. A tour would cost more but you would get a better understanding of the history and everything would be organised for you.
Getting Around Dujiangyan
We used Didi to get around Dujiangyan as it was easy, cheap and very convenient. The language barrier is no problem as it is all organised in the app. We used it to get to and from the train stations and Panda Valley.
We were able to walk around the ancient town, Blue Tears and Yangtianwo Square. We used the train to get to Dujiangyan and to leave. There are two train stations, we used the Dujiangyan Train Station but next time I would use the Lidui Park Railway Station which is closer to town.

Best Time to Visit Dujiangyan
The most pleasant time to visit Dujiangyan is during spring (March โ May) and autumn (September โ November) when the weather is usually clear and cool.
What Dujiangyan Was Like When We Visited in August
We visited in August and it was hot but fine, we didn’t have rain and it wasn’t too humid. However, we did happen to visit during the school holiday period in China which meant it was all a little busier than usual. We had to line up a little at Panda Valley but it wasn’t overwhelmingly busy.
What to Bring for an Overnight Dujiangyan Stay
These are the essentials for an overnight trip to Dujiangyan:
- passport;
- train bookings;
- hotel booking;
- comfortable shoes;
- water;
- umbrella/rain jacket;
- sunscreen;
- power bank;
- translation app;
- Alipay/WeChat.

Dujiangyan FAQs

Yes, there is actually more to see here than we expected. The Panda Valley is excellent, the ancient town is really big and full of cool snacks and stores, the massive selfie panda is huge and we really loved the evening vibe and seeing the Blue Tears.
Is Dujiangyan worth staying overnight?
For us it was definitely worth staying overnight, we liked not having the pressure of getting to the station so we could enjoy the atmosphere and get up early to be amongst the first to enter Panda Valley and see the pandas before they fell asleep.
Can you visit Dujiangyan as a day trip from Chengdu?
Yes, you can definitely do a day trip but I would recommend getting there as early as possible to fit more in.
How many nights do you need in Dujiangyan?
One night was enough for the itinerary we followed: ancient town and Blue Tears on the first evening, then Panda Valley the next morning. If you also want to properly explore the Dujiangyan Irrigation System or Mount Qingcheng, I’d consider two nights or allow substantially more time.
How do you get from Chengdu to Dujiangyan?
You can take a high-speed train to Dujiangyan from Xipu Train Station, which is just outside of Chengdu and takes approximately 43 minutes to the city and cost us 22CNY/US$3.29 in a Didi from the city.
How do you get from Dujiangyan to Chengdu?
Take a high-speed train to Xipu Train Station and then a Didi to Chengdu.

The Blue Tears are an illuminated river that runs through the town of Dujiangyan. It is very pretty to witness.
Are the Blue Tears natural?
No, the name describes the illuminated river effect of the blue lights illuminating the rushing river.

Absolutely, we loved our visit to Panda Valley. It felt so authentic and the landscaping was beautiful.
Is Panda Valley the same as Dujiangyan Panda Base?
No, they are two separate places, we visited Panda Valley. The separate Dujiangyan Panda Base closed for renovations in April 2026 and remained closed when we checked in October 2026.
How long do you need at Panda Valley?
We spent 3.5 hours at Panda Valley, just standing watching the pandas and red pandas. I would recommend around 3 hours for a visit for most people.

Final Thoughts โ Is Dujiangyan Worth an Overnight Stay?
While we could have treated Dujiangyan as another day trip, but staying the night gave us something different. We were able to enjoy the Blue Tears, eat at street stalls with locals and ancient town lit up in the evening at a relaxed pace. We didn’t spend our time watching the clock and stressing about trains.
Getting up early and being some of the first in line to see the pandas at Panda Valley was great too. We got to see them at their most active. We were able to head off to Chengdu without feeling rushed. If we were planning the trip again and wanted both Panda Valley and the Blue Tears, we’d stay overnight again.
