We stayed in four different Chengdu hotels across the main areas of the city, which has given us a much better understanding of where you should actually stay on your first visit!
Chengdu is huge, and many hotels are described as being central, near Chunxi Road or Taikoo Li when the actual location can feel very different once you’re there. After staying near Chunxi Road, Taikoo Li, Wenshu Monastery, Kuanzhai Alley and People’s Park we found that choosing the right neighbourhood matters almost as much as choosing the hotel itself.
In this guide we’re comparing all four hotels we personally stayed in – including the rooms, breakfast, noise, location, metro access and what each area felt like. We explain which one we’d choose if we were booking Chengdu again.
Our quick answer: Mercure Chengdu Kuanzhai Alley Central was our best all-round stay, UrCove by HYATT Wenshu Monastery was our personal favourite, and ibis Chengdu Chunxi Road is our pick for most first-time visitors.

Which Area of Chengdu Is Best for Tourists?
The area you stay in Chengdu can have a big impact on your experience in the city. Being central is key but Chengdu is huge so there are lots of areas that are central and each has its own unique vibe. These are the main areas that we think would be best to stay.
Chunxi Road & Taikoo Li — Best for First-Time Visitors
For first-time visitors to Chengdu the Chunxi Road and Taikoo Li area will be the most comfortable. This is the main hub, with lots of shopping, restaurants and the highest concentration of the facilities tourists want. It has a central feel with good Didi availability and evening activity. If you prefer to return to your hotel during the day for a rest it is easier here and the area feels more modern than historic. If you have 2-3 days in Chengdu and want good metro connections, easy access to main sights such as the IFS Panda, Daci Temple and Taikoo Li then you will love staying here, it is the most ‘central feeling’ of the central locations.
What we actually found: We enjoyed staying so close to a few of the main attractions in Chengdu. The surrounding streets had the highest density of convenience stores and transport options.

We stayed in two hotels around this side of Chengdu—see how they compared below.
Kuanzhai Alley & People’s Park — Best for Character
We really loved staying in this area. It has the feel of a local neighbourhood while still being convenient for People’s Park and KuanZhai Alley, which are some of our favourite places in Chengdu. Here you experience the older Chengdu feel, traditional lanes, teahouses, quiet evenings and charming moments amongst the busy city. There are food streets around and walking is a trade-off for the quieter atmosphere, it is a less intense location than Chunxi Road although a little left of the centre of Chengdu, still very much central, particularly where Didi is so convenient and cheap to use.
If atmosphere means more than convenience, this is the location for you.

Wenshu Monastery Area — Best for Quieter Chengdu
The Wenshu Monastery area is an underrated quiet location for a Chengdu stay. The area has easy walking access to the Wenshu Monastery and its pedestrian street. The atmosphere here is local and quiet, there are restaurants available and there may also be better-value accommodation here.
The Wenshu Monastery area has a quieter and calmer atmosphere, we enjoyed staying here as it was peaceful. We went for a walk in the evening and it was dark, no one was really around and there was little traffic. It is not somewhere you stay for the buzz, it is where you stay to get away from it.

Tianfu Square — Convenient, But Would We Stay There?
We wouldn’t personally choose Tianfu Square over the areas we stayed in. It’s central and convenient, but when we explored this part of Chengdu it felt less atmospheric to us than Kuanzhai and less interesting for an evening than Chunxi Road.

Chengdu Hotel Comparison — The 4 Hotels We Stayed In
| Hotel | Area | Best for | What we liked most | Biggest downside | Our rating | Check price |

| Mercure Chengdu Kuanzhai Alley Central | Kuanzhai Alley / Tonghuimen | Local neighbourhood/Kuanzhai Alley/snack street | Decor, service, breakfast | The furthest from the centre | 8/10 | Mercure Chengdu Kuanzhai Alley Central |
| ibis Chengdu Chunxi Road | Chunxi Road | Good for first-time visitors | Most central location | Room is less aesthetic | 7.5/10 | ibis Chengdu Chunxi Road |
| UrCove by HYATT Chengdu Wenshu Monastery | Wenshu Monastery | People who want a quiet and luxurious feeling stay | Nicest interior, rooms and quality | The location is very quiet if you want nightlife | 8.5/10 | UrCove by HYATT Chengdu Wenshu Monastery |

Nostalgia S Hotel (Chengdu Kuanzhai Alley) — Best for Old Chengdu Atmosphere
Best for: couples / value / atmosphere
We loved our stay at Nostalgia S Hotel, the hotel was so nicely decorated with a traditional style that was simultaneously modern and clean. There were clothes that you could use to dress in for photos, a free evening tea and congee station for supper and a water station to fill your bottle.
Location
The location of Nostalgia S Hotel is an easy walk to People’s Park and Kuanzhai Alley. It is a local area that is quiet and peaceful, we were in the front room and didn’t get disturbed at all by noise. The closest metro is People’s Park Station. We walked from the hotel to People’s Park and also to Kuanzhai Alley which we visited multiple times. Didi was easy to use here which also makes the rest of the city very accessible. The hotel is set on a nice street, there are local restaurants across the street and to the left where there is also a store on the corner.

Our Room
We loved our stay at Nostalgia Hotel, it really felt like we were staying in an authentic part of old Chengdu. Our room type was a xana-linglong room which was smaller with little space for storage but still fine for the two of us. The bed was comfortable and the bathroom and amenities were clean and modern. The air-conditioning worked perfectly and the whole room and hotel felt very clean and cosy. There was a small fridge, tea and coffee area and some complimentary local snacks in our room that were fun for us to try.

Breakfast
We loved the breakfast at Nostalgia S Hotel, it felt handmade and very carefully put together, there is a man that organises it who will check your payment then show you the buffet. There are two ladies that prepare the food and when they heard that I was unable to eat soy sauce and noodles made sure I had fried rice the following morning. There was a range of Western-style foods such as pastries, eggs, fruits and toast. The Chinese-style foods were steaming baskets of buns, dim sum, sweet potato, corn and fresh noodles.
A coffee machine and tea were provided alongside juices and milk, the host was very happy to help you work the machine. Everything felt very high quality and there was enough seating for everyone that came through. We were genuinely happy with the breakfast here and would choose to have it again.

What We Liked
We liked that we could walk to both People’s Park and Kuanzhai Alley easily and that the hotel had such a comfortable traditional yet clean and modern atmosphere. The other factor we loved was the quiet peaceful location, yet walking around outside in the evenings made us feel like we were experiencing local life. While the staff didn’t speak English they had excellent translators that instantly translated everything they were saying into English, they all carried them and could quickly communicate at any time.
What We Didn’t Like
The only things we didn’t like were our room was a little small, it was fine but a little extra room is always good! There was a People’s Park metro station which was a bit of a walk away although we used Didi so this didn’t matter to us.
Who Should Stay Here?
Book this hotel if you want quaint retro vibes with modern and clean standards and the chance to experience a local neighbourhood.
Skip it if you want an ultra-modern hotel with a super central location right near a metro.
Nostalgia S Hotel Final Verdict
Nostalgia S Hotel had a cool retro feel, free evening tea/congee, quiet surroundings and easy access to People’s Park. We really loved the cosy traditional vibes, kind staff and quaint location. This hotel had a character and atmosphere that feels different from generic international chains. It felt authentic and genuine, like a piece of old Chengdu and we loved it for that!

ibis Chengdu Chunxi Road — Best for Central Location and Value
Best for: First-time visitors, central location, value.
We enjoyed our stay at the ibis Chengdu Chunxi Road, it was good value for money and super central to the main tourist area.
Location
ibis Chengdu Chunxi Road is really well located not far from Taikoo Li and metro stations and convenience stores. This is a good value and convenient location mix.

Our Room
Our landscape king floor to ceiling windows room we had was on a high floor overlooking the street below. It was spacious and the bathroom was clean and sufficient with everything we needed. The air conditioning was excellent, perhaps the best we had in any hotel in Chengdu. It was a nice, clean and comfortable room, without the extra plush vibes of other places we stayed but still the largest room we had and very nice.

Breakfast
At ibis Chengdu breakfast was not included but a small extra charge of US$4.18 per person. It was a very good buffet, including a man making fresh noodle bowls on request, just choose your noodle type and then add your own toppings. The rest of the buffet was also a good mix of Western and Chinese foods, including fruit, toast, pastries, eggs as well as rice, noodle dishes, stir-fried vegetables and hot baskets with buns, dim sum and corn.
Tea, coffee and juices were available and staff were constantly topping up food as it ran low.

What We Liked
We really enjoyed that we were central, there were Western-style convenience stores to grab things from and we were close to the IFS area and walkable to Chunxi Road. We liked that our room was a predictable standard chain style quality and very spacious.
What We Didn’t Like
As the location was very central it was a little noisier than other areas we stayed around the city and had less charm than the quieter areas.
Who Should Stay Here?
Book this hotel if you want a central location with a buzzing vibe and a hotel that feels very familiar.
Skip it if you want a quieter location and more character.
ibis Chengdu Chunxi Road Hotel Final Verdict
Our stay at ibis Chengdu Chunxi Road was comfortable, reliable and good value. Our room was clean, comfortable with the largest space of all the hotels we stayed at during our time in Chengdu. The area was busy with lots of activity right outside the door. It is perfect if you want a good-value central location for a short stay or your first time in Chengdu.

UrCove by HYATT Chengdu Wenshu Monastery — Best for an upscale stay in a quiet location
Best for: Travellers looking for a unique location and quiet, luxurious stay.
This was one of our favourite stays in Chengdu, the hotel felt like a very good quality stay and we loved the quiet location.
Location
Located a very short walk to the Wenshu Monastery area it is a quiet and peaceful suburb. We went for a walk in the evening and there was no one around and barely any cars, even when walking down the pedestrian street it was closed up and quiet at around 9pm. The nearby pedestrian street has a great local restaurant that we recommend for the Dan Dan noodles and there is an affordable Sichuan face-changing opera show performed here also.

Our Room
We chose a deluxe king room and it was light and bright, it felt very open, walking into an entry area with hanging space and storage. The bathroom and separate shower and basin were here before entering the bedroom and sitting area. We loved the arrangement of the space, it flowed well. The design is very aesthetic, clean and comfortable with a distinct luxury, plush feeling

Breakfast
The breakfast buffet at URCove by Hyatt Chengdu was excellent, the range of Chinese and Western dishes was great and one of the buffets where I noticed regularly the dishes were hot, not cool like they had been sitting out for a long time. They were presented very nicely and in smaller portions so they were turned over more quickly. The pastries were very nice and the freshly made noodles and other Chinese-style stir-fry dishes were great. I was really happy to find fried rice with no soy sauce available for a gluten-free option and Mike loved the steaming baskets with the usual fare but done very well. Staff were maintaining the cleanliness and levels of all food as well as the tea, coffee and juice station.

What We Liked
The quiet neighbourhood was perfect for us, we loved that it was very peaceful at night and we could walk to the nearby Wenshu Monastery and pedestrian street through the day. We really loved the plush, luxurious feel of the room and bedding also.
What We Didn’t Like
It was slightly farther from the centre, while this wasn’t a big problem for us it is the only thing we didn’t like.
Who Should Stay Here?
Book this hotel if you want a quiet location and a very comfortable, quiet stay in a good quality space.
Skip it if you want a busy location with lots to do around it.
UrCove by HYATT Chengdu Wenshu Monastery Final Verdict
Our stay at the UrCove by HYATT Chengdu Wenshu Monastery was one of our favourites in the city. We loved the quiet location, the quality interior and design that felt slightly more modern and elevated than other options we tested, it is a perfect stay for anyone who is looking for a little more of a luxurious stay at a reasonable price.

Mercure Chengdu Kuanzhai Alley Central — Best Overall
Best for an overall pleasant stay.
The Mercure Chengdu Kuanzhai Alley Central really is a hotel that offers everything you want for a comfortable city stay and is the hotel that we would recommend to anyone.
Location
The Mercure Chengdu Kuanzhai Alley Central is located within walking distance to Kuanzhai Alley and there is an excellent snack street that comes alive in the evenings to try local foods. The location is also central enough to reach other areas within Chengdu easily via metro or Didi which is our preference.

Our Room
We really liked our queen room, it was very comfortable and had a separate lounge sitting area, bedroom and the bathroom was separate from the shower and basin-my preferred configuration. The shower was excellent, the best of all the hotels we tried and overall the room was of a high quality. The bed was super comfortable and we rested very well, the surroundings were quiet, it was not a noisy area.

Breakfast
The breakfast at the Mercure was the best of all the hotels we stayed at. It was massive and so extensive. There were big sections of Western fare, Chinese dishes and then a general fruit, pastries and danishes area with tea, coffee and juices.
Fresh food was being cooked to order in front of you and staff were constantly topping up plates and drinks. It was an incredibly large buffet, with so much to try we couldn’t believe it.

What We Liked
The whole experience at the Mercure was enjoyable, we loved everything from our room, the buffet breakfast, the location and the excellent service. We had only a good experience here.
What We Didn’t Like
We really liked everything but if I have to choose something the location is a little less convenient to Chunxi Road but still in a great position, and preferable for me.
Who Should Stay Here?
Book this hotel if you want a relaxing stay, great breakfast and very comfortable room.
Skip it if you want a lot of character or a very busy area.
Mercure Chengdu Kuanzhai Alley Central Final Verdict
Honestly couldn’t fault our stay in the Mercure Chengdu Kuanzhai Alley Central, we loved everything from the room to the location near the food street and Kuanzhai Alley. There was enough to see in the area and coming back to this hotel in the evening was a pleasure.

Which Chengdu Hotel Would We Stay In Again?
This is a very hard decision as they were all good in their own right but if we have to choose these are our preferences:
Best overall
Mercure Chengdu Kuanzhai Alley Central – it has the best complete overall experience. The proximity to Kuanzhai alley and snack street is great and the hotel really can’t be faulted.
Best for a first Chengdu trip
ibis Chengdu Chunxi Road – because it is in a very convenient location for a first visit to Chengdu and has a good standard of rooms and breakfast for a fair price.
Best for atmosphere
Nostalgia S Hotel – this hotel packs more charm and quaint atmosphere into its rooms and shared spaces than any other. It really feels like you stepped into Old Chengdu (with clean modern convenience) and we loved it!
Best value
ibis Chengdu Chunxi Road – for the price, quality and location you can’t go past the ibis for a value stay.
Best room
UrCove by HYATT Chengdu Wenshu Monastery – the rooms at the URCove by Hyatt just felt more luxurious. The finishes, bedding and all details in the rooms really had an elevated feel. It was the best room and the best quality.
Best breakfast
Mercure Chengdu Kuanzhai Alley Central – this breakfast shocked us with how extensive and well organised it was, we loved being able to try so many local dishes as well as some comforting Western fare.
Best location
Difficult because as a first-time visitor you would want ibis Chengdu Chunxi due to the very central location. If you want a quiet location then URCove by Hyatt Wenshu or Nostalgia S Hotel would be the best choice.
If we were booking Chengdu tomorrow, we’d choose UrCove by HYATT Chengdu Wenshu Monastery because we just loved the quality of the room, it felt so elevated and well put together. All facilities felt new, modern and very comfortable, we couldn’t fault it.
Our Chengdu Hotel Map

Chunxi Road vs Kuanzhai Alley — Which Is Better?
| Feature | Chunxi Road / Taikoo Li | Kuanzhai Alley / People’s Park |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Convenience | Atmosphere |
| Restaurants | Excellent | Very good |
| Shopping | Excellent | Limited |
| Old Chengdu feel | Low | Excellent |
| Metro | Excellent | Good |
| Evenings | Busy/modern | Quieter/traditional |
| Short stay | Better | Good |
| Couples | Good | Excellent |
| Our preference | For a first time visitor. | We would choose this area again. |
For a first 2–3 night visit, we’d choose the Chunxi Road/Taikoo Li location as it is very central and convenient.
However, for a slower 4–5 night visit, we’d choose Kuanzhai Alley as it has more historic and traditional feel around the neighbourhoods that adds charm to the experience.

Best Area to Stay for the Chengdu Panda Base
You probably don’t need to stay near the Panda Base to have a great panda experience. Overall staying in central Chengdu is more useful as there are buses that you can take from Chunxi Road that go to the Panda Base or use the metro or a Didi will easily pick you up there.
For an early morning Panda Base trip I would stay at either the ibis Chengdu Chunxi Road for its very central location or the URCove by Hyatt Wenshu as it is a little north of the centre and that is the direction of the Panda Base if you are taking a Didi.
Read our Chengdu Panda Base guide for the exact route and timing.

Best Chengdu Hotel for a Leshan Day Trip
We stayed at the Mercure Chengdu Kuanzhai Alley Central the night before our day trip to Leshan Giant Buddha and it was great although a slightly longer Didi ride to the Chengdu East Railway Station where the train leaves from. If you want to be closer then I would stay at the ibis Chengdu Chunxi Road which is the most central and would be a little quicker to get to the station in the morning.

Best Chengdu Hotel for a Dujiangyan Day Trip
The train to Dujiangyan leaves from the Xipu Station just outside of Chengdu. You would either take a train there or do what we did and Didi there. The URCove by Hyatt Wenshu is on the northern side of the central city area so that would be convenient but so would the Mercure Chengdu Kuanzhai Alley Central, both would be great choices.

What to Look for When Booking a Hotel in Chengdu
These are the things to look out for on a booking for a hotel in China, it will help you find what suits you best.
Check the actual metro location
Hotel names can imply an area without actually being at the attraction. Lots of hotels use Chunxi Road, but look on the maps to find out how walkable it actually is!
Save the hotel name in Chinese
Very useful for Didi when it may not pick it up in English. We also take note of a landmark nearby in case this doesn’t work so we can get back to a close location to the hotel.
Confirm whether breakfast is included
At times there will be a ‘breakfast for one’ included but the other person has to pay, this never makes sense to us and we don’t book these listings.
Check room size
Rooms can be very small, make sure you look at the size to see if you have enough room, especially if you are travelling with a family or lots of luggage.
Check non-smoking reviews
We hate staying in a room that smells of smoke, most hotels offer non-smoking rooms but the air conditioning can carry it through. Reading the reviews and looking for other comments about this helps to avoid a problem.
Look at recent guest photos
The photos on listings can be very beautiful but at times misleading, making rooms look newer than they are. Definitely look at the photos in reviews to get a real sense of what you are booking.
Check laundry facilities
So valuable for long international trips, we used the washing machines at the URCove by Hyatt which was so helpful. They usually also have dryers available but they’re usually full.
Make sure you’re looking at the correct Chengdu airport/station
Chengdu has multiple important transport options and stations. Double-check which you need to use to make sure you work out what suits you best.
How We Book Hotels in China
For China, we generally check Trip.com first because it has broad China inventory, an easy English-language interface, extensive guest reviews and often competitive pricing. We also compare Booking.com when the same hotel is available.
