Our Experience: Why We Visited Both
We chose to visit both Negril and Montego Bay because we wanted to judge for ourselves which was better and while we had heard a lot about Montego Bay we hadn’t heard as much about Negril. We really wanted to soak up the best of Jamaicas beaches and thought we should see as much as possible. Our route was Kingston (2 days) → Negril (5 days) → Montego Bay (1 day). We are mid-range travellers and stayed independently, not in resorts so our comparison is based on local travel—not all-inclusive resort stays.

Beaches: Negril Wins Easily
When comparing the beaches in Negril and Montego Bay, Negril is the clear winner. The famous Seven Mile Beach is stunning and one of the best we have seen in the Caribbean. The water colour is crystal clear and blue and the sand is perfectly white. You can walk for miles and enjoy it without being interupted and there are beach bars and restaurants all the way along.
Montego Bay has nice beaches but they are mostly at private resorts or beach clubs. The best options that are easily accessed are Doctor’s Cave (paid) and Harmony Beach (free). The beaches are well kept and organised but still not as beautiful as Seven Mile Beach. Montego Bay beaches are good, but Negril beaches are destination-worthy.
🏆 Negril

Resorts & Luxury: Montego Bay Wins
Montego Bay has a strong all-inclusive resort culture. There are many resort quality hotels and all-inclusive hotels here to choose from with private beaches. The airport in Montego Bay is also really convenient and some of the best hotels are located within a reasonable distance. Some of the best hotels and resorts near the airport are S Hotel, Half Moon. There are a couple a little further away but on a good beach, check out Hotel Riu Palace Jamaica, Sandals Jamaica Caribbean Cay and Zoëtry Montego Bay.
Negril does have some beach resorts but there are more regular hotels than all-inclusive and luxury options, Montego Bay is more set up with lots options.
🏆 Montego Bay

Food Scene: Surprisingly Close
There is a good food scene in both Negril and Montego Bay. At Negril you will find lots of local restaurants and beach bars. There are some excellent options on the cliff area as well, The Lodge is a must visit for lunch and cocktails as is Rick’s Cafe to watch the cliff jumpers at sunset.
In Montego Bay there are some great restaurants, we loved the Pork Pit where you can get jerk chicken or pork and it’s cooked over the coals right in front of you. The food is delicious and so worth it! There are loads of options here we would have liked to have tried but didn’t have time.

Atmosphere: Which Feels More Jamaican?
This is a tricky topic because it is going to be different for each persons tastes but for us Negril had the more Jamaican vibe. It moved at a slower pace, there was music in the air during the day and evenings and the atmosphere was light and easy. We naturally just chatted and met locals that were working or hanging around the beach, there were some great characters who we had a laugh with. We felt relaxed and at ease in Negril.
Montego Bay is a busy city. The beaches are nice, but the experience feels more like a managed resort or venue rather than a free-flowing beach environment.. It is an interesting place to visit, with lots of historical significance. Montego Bay felt like a resort and convenience hub, whereas Negril felt more natural, relaxed and slow-paced travel.
🏆 Negril

Nightlife: Montego Bay Wins
Montego Bay has lots of bars, clubs and venues that operate in the Hip Strip area whereas Negril has bars and restaurants that close up by evening. We often walked back along the beach in the evening after sunset and it was very quiet. There was one pool party on while we were there but it didn’t really seem to fit in with the area. If you are looking for a place with a thriving nightlife you would want to head to Montego Bay.

Costs: Which Is Cheaper?
Both locations have budget, mid-range and luxury accommodation options for similar pricing. There is also a range of affordable restaurants and drinks as well as tour options in both destinations. Really there isn’t much in it and for us it is too similar to call.

Safety: Which Felt Safer?
For us personally, we felt safer in Negril. In all honest we weren’t feeling unsafe in Montego Bay, it is just a big busy city and that vibe is never as comfortable as a chilled out beach vibe. In both places we used route taxis and Ubers and both were fine. We walked into and out of town in both and it was never a problem nor was walking around attractions. I think the biggest difference is the style of location. A busy city has more opportunity for petty theft compared to a slower paced beach location. I would recommend taking a tour in Montego Bay if you are not a confident traveller.
🏆 Negril (for us)

Location & Convenience
Negril is located on the western coastline of Jamaica and there is no large international airport nearby whereas Montego Bay has an excellent airport right near the town.
Montego Bay has the easiest entry and exit point, with its own Sangster International Airport located just 3.5 km (15 minutes) from the centre of town. To compare the travel time to an airport from Negril the Sangster International Airport is 80km (about 1.5 hours away by car) away and Norman Manley International Airport is 240km (about 4.5 hours away by shuttle/car) away.

FAQ For Negril vs Montego Bay
Is Negril better than Montego Bay?
For us, without staying in resorts, Negril was better than Montego Bay. We loved the relaxed pace, stunning beaches that went on forever and easy vibe.
Which has better beaches?
Negril has the best beach, Seven Mile Beach is so stunning it really is hard to beat.
Is Negril safer?
Negril felt safer because it is more open, less busy and centred around the beach. They are two very different places, a slower beach destination and a busy city. I think it would be different if we had spent most of our time in a resort in Montego Bay, rather than in the main city area. We didn’t feel unsafe walking the Hip Strip during the day, but as with any busy tourist area, we stayed aware of our surroundings.
Can you do both?
Yes! We think visiting both Negril and Montego Bay would be the best choice. We recommend spending more time in Negril.
Where should first timers stay?
In Negril I would choose to stay on the beach and if you have time spend a night or two on the cliffs. In Montego Bay I would stay at The S Hotel Resort or the Riu Resort.
Which is cheaper?
Both Negril and Montego Bay are very similar in pricing there are budget and luxury options at both in all areas.
How many days should you spend?
I would spend as many as possible in Negril, we spent 5 and would have loved a couple more. In Montego Bay it depends on where you plan to stay and what you plan to do. If you are in a resort then I could easily soak it up for 3 days. If you plan to do excursions to the waterfalls and rafting (I plan to next time!) and to the Appleton Distillery then you may need to account for these day trips.
Final Verdict
For us Negril wins, we preferred the beach, the slower atmosphere and pace and how local it felt. We loved our easy beach day routine and that we could really relax here. The beach is one of the most stunning we have ever seen and coupled with good restaurants, beach bars and the incredible cliff area it is hard to beat.
But – if your goal is easy arrival, resorts and convenience then Montego Bay is still a great choice.
If we returned tomorrow we would spend 5-7 days in Negril + final day at a resort or on a tour in Montego Bay before flying out.
