What Makes This One of the Best Taco Tours in Mexico City

Curated taco stops

The Chilango Tacos 101 Tour makes curated stops so you are getting to try some of the best tacos in Mexico City chosen by a chef and local (Chilango means local person from Mexico City). You are not stopping at ‘insta famous’ but low quality spots. Instead you get to experience the real food that locals eat.

Cultural context

Not only do you taste the food but you get the history of the restaurant or taco style, learn about the ingredients and taste regional styles of tacos.

Local neighbourhood access

This taco tour took us to areas tourists wouldn’t discover alone. Without the tour and guide we would have walked past most of the places we visited missing out on the delicious experiences that were only steps away.

Great for first-time visitors

Going on a tour removes stress and uncertainty about the city and the food. As a first time visititor to Mexico City we could ask our guide questions about the food but also the city. Learning useful tips for our time there. We also learnt a lot about Mexican food and the way Mexicans view different food and tacos.

Every Taco We Tried on the Tour

We tried some incredible tacos on this tour, we really loved it all but had a few particular favourites!

Al Pastor Tacos & Carnitas Tacos

These are the taco of Mexico City! I really loved them, the flavour was perfectly balanced from the vertical spit cooking and sweet pineapple cooked on top. I was really surprised to learn about the Lebanese influence and why Mexico City is famous for them.

The carnitas tacos were very tasty also, I had a regular one while Mike was a little more adventurous and chose a brain and intestine taco! He was happy to try something unique and I was happy to have a regular one.

Mole & Guisados Tacos

We tried some delicious mole tacos that were so hearty and warming that I had to get a second one. The mole was delicious and felt just like I was eating with family. We also got a crispy pork taco that was rich and tasty! These were a huge crowd favourite.

Exotic or Regional Tacos

We tried cochinita pibil tacos which were rich and saucy from a local stand. These regional ingredients and adventurous flavours were exciting to experience in Mexico City as we had also had them from their local area in Merida.

On our way to a market we tried a very exotic local taco made with blue corn and cactus. It was incredible, slightly smokey and spicy it was such a treat.

Salsa & Condiment Experience

Salsa and condiments are king in Mexico. You wont find a table without them. Our guide explained what the salsas were and what goes best with each taco which was great. They all have different spice levels, in Mexico the salsa bar culture is real.

Is the Mexico City Taco Tour Worth It?

This Mexico City Taco Tour is absolutely worth it! It shows you the best local hidden gems, is incredibly safe and convenient as you learn about the culutre and food while being guided by a local. You will eat so much that you are stuffed by the end of the tour. You can ask for as many tacos as you like, if you taste one that you love then definitely ask for extra, it is expected. Drinks are also available on the tour we had agua frescas, soft drink and beer. In comparison to self-guided taco hopping this tour was absolutely worth it.

Who This Tour Is Best For

A taco tour in Mexico City is perfect for honestly everyone, but especially:

  • first-time Mexico visitors
  • foodies
  • solo travellers
  • couples
  • nervous street food eaters

The tour is able to accommodate dietary restrictions, Kelly is coeliac and has a seafood allergy and it was perfectly suited for her. The guide was well versed in allergies and was able to confirm the food was safe for her to enjoy as well.

Mexico City Taco Tips From Our Experience

I advise you to go a little hungry as you will definitely leave full! We ate so much more than we expected. I would book as early as possible as they can fill up.
