Sakuraco Review: Is This Japanese Snack Box Worth It?

by Kelly October 24, 2026

A Little Taste of Japan at Home!

One of the things we love most about travelling through Japan is discovering all the little regional treats along the way. So when our Sakuraco box arrived, filled with snacks inspired by Mount Fuji and Yamanashi Prefecture, it brought back some wonderful memories of our own travels around the area.

From beautifully presented Japanese sweets to traditional tea and local specialities, it felt like bringing a little piece of Japan into our home. And with another trip to Japan coming up, it made us even more excited to return!

We think it would make a lovely gift for anyone who loves Japan, has travelled there or simply enjoys discovering unique treats. Here’s what we thought of our box.

What Is Sakuraco?

Sakuraco is a Japanese snack subscription box which features traditional sweets, savoury snacks, teas and small cultural items. The boxes are themed around regions, festivals, seasons or Japanese traditions. They are designed to introduce subscribers to regional flavours and smaller Japanese makers. It also includes a 24-page cultural guide and Japanese homeware and is shipped directly from Japan.

Sakuraco’s past collections include Okinawa, Hokkaido, Hiroshima, Kyoto and Mount Fuji.

Our Sakuraco Mount Fuji Box Review — First Impressions

We were excited to receive our Sakuraco box, we love Japan and trying all the local foods was a highlight. Our box arrived promptly and was delivered exactly on time. It was packaged well and everything was intact.

We opened the postage packaging and found a beautiful blue box, the presentation and artwork on the box was gorgeous, everything was packed so carefully.

Opening the box was so exciting, we didn’t know what to expect. There was a selection of treats, explanation booklet and a cloth with the iconic Mt Fuji image. The cloth really brought back memories of Mt Fuji. The snacks immediately looked a little more elevated and distinct from supermarket snacks, as though they were from small vendors in the region.

The best part of the Sakuraco box was the experience of opening and sharing the treats together. It was a really lovely moment, finding the next treat, reading the information about where it came from and tasting it. We got so excited for our upcoming return to Japan.

What’s Inside the August 2026 Discovering Mt. Fuji Box?

The box we reviewed was Sakuraco’s August 2026 “Discovering Mt. Fuji” box. Sakuraco changes its theme and contents regularly, so this is an example of the type of box you can receive rather than a guarantee of what the current box contains. Sakuraco’s August edition was themed around Mount Fuji and Yamanashi Prefecture.

The box included traditional Japanese sweets Omotenashi dorayaki, Mount Fuji warabimochi, Kanten Shingen mochi, sweet potato amanatto and kuri senbei. There was regional fruit-inspired treats such as Yamanashi peach jelly and Kyoho grape mini pie.

There was also tea and a cultural keepsake, Mount Fuji ryokucha and a Mount Fuji tenugui cloth. The box also included salted agemochi, seaweed soy chips, Yamanashi corn senbei and cookies.

Our Favourite Snacks From the Box

Our favourite snack was the Yamanashi peach jelly, the Yamanashi corn senbei and the cultural item were our favourite things.

i loved these jelly cups

More Than Just Snacks — The Cultural Experience

The box is really more than just snack, it is a cultural experience. We learnt a lot about the region we didn’t know when we visited. We also got to enjoy trying new flavours we missed on our trip and trying the traditional tea.

The whole experience felt more meaningful than simply buying an assortment of imported sweets. There was an intentional moment where we could relive our trip and talk about the memories we have.

What about dietary restrictions?

I was initially worried about whether I would be able to enjoy the box because I need to avoid gluten and seafood. Thankfully, I found the allergen information in the booklet really helpful. Each product had allergen information listed, which made it much easier for me to work out which treats I could safely try and which ones I would leave for Mike.

I really loved and appreciated this feature and felt confident trying the foods that were gluten-free. I loved that I was able to join in and relax while experiencing flavours that I missed while we were there because of the language barrier.

Everyone’s dietary requirements are different, so I would still recommend checking the current ingredients and allergen information yourself before eating anything.

Is Sakuraco Worth It? Our Honest Opinion

For us, yes. But we don’t think the value comes simply from adding up the cost of the individual snacks.

What we enjoyed most was the overall experience — discovering treats from a particular region of Japan, learning about where they came from and sharing them together. The presentation also makes the box feel much more like a gift than simply a collection of snacks.

If you’re looking purely for the cheapest way to buy Japanese snacks, there are probably less expensive options. But if you’re looking for a fun Japanese experience to enjoy at home, particularly if you’ve travelled to Japan or are planning a trip, or for a unique gift, we think Sakuraco offers something special.

What we lovedThings to consider
Lovely connection to our Japan travelsMore expensive than everyday snacks
Beautiful presentationShipping adds to the cost
Interesting regional themesCan’t choose every snack
Mix of sweet, savoury and teaDietary restrictions may limit what you can enjoy
Makes a thoughtful giftA future box won’t contain the same products

How Much Does Sakuraco Cost?

PlanAdvertised cost per boxBilling
MonthlyUS$37.50Monthly
3 monthsUS$35.50US$106.50 upfront
6 monthsUS$33.50US$201 upfront
12 monthsUS$32.50US$390 upfront

The longer plans reduce the price per box but require a bigger payment upfront, and check international shipping to your location at the checkout as well as cancellation terms. Pricing was current at time of writing, however are subject to change.

I love that you can choose to purchase a single box to try it before you commit to a longer subscription, or to treat a friend or family member intermittently.

Does Sakuraco Make a Good Christmas or Birthday Gift?

I think that Sakuraco makes a great gift for Christmas, birthdays or those ‘just because’ moments to let someone know you are thinking of them.

A Christmas Gift for Someone Who Loves Japan

Christmas can be a stressful time with so many people to buy for, if you know someone who is going to or wants to go to Japan this could be the perfect, thoughtful gift for them. If they have already been to Japan they will get to relive their memories and try some new flavours they may have missed. If they still want to go then it might ignite the spark that gets them to finally book that trip, or get them excited of their upcoming trip! It can be enjoyed by a couple together or as a family and is definitely more unique than a lot of other gifts they will receive.

A Thoughtful Birthday Present

If you are looking for a thoughtful birthday present, a Sakuraco box could be the perfect solution, I know I would love to get it! Ideal for food lovers, tea drinkers or Japan enthusiasts and very different to a traditional gift hamper. I love that you can buy just a one-off subscription or an ongoing subscription for them to enjoy for a few months.

Or Just a Little Treat for Yourself

If you want to treat yourself this is a cute way to do it, even better if you are counting down to a trip to Japan. A monthly subscription can help get you excited for your travels or the perfect way to remember them. I really love how each month highlights a different region of Japan.

Sakuraco has a dedicated gift-subscription offering that allows a personalised message, perfect if you want the box delivered straight to them!

Sakuraco vs TokyoTreat — Which Japanese Snack Box Should You Choose?

Sakuraco is the sister company to Tokyo Treat. They are a very similar concept, with a few small differences.

SakuracoTokyoTreat
Main focusTraditional Japanese snacks and culturePopular, playful Japanese snacks
Typical productsWagashi, tea and regional treatsContemporary and limited-edition snacks
ExperienceRelaxed Japanese tea-time experienceFun snack discovery
Best suited toJapan lovers, traditional food enthusiasts, gift recipientsFans of popular Japanese treats and novelty snacks

TokyoTreat and Sakuraco are similar but designed around different snacking experiences. TokyoTreat is more focused on contemporary Japanese snack culture, whereas Sakuraco is better suited to someone who appreciates regional traditions and Japanese tea culture. If you prefer traditional regional Japanese treats and cultural experiences, we think Sakuraco is the better fit. TokyoTreat is more focused on contemporary, popular and novelty Japanese snacks.

Who Would We Recommend Sakuraco To?

We would recommend Sakuraco for people who love Japan and Japanese culture. Travellers who miss the experiences they enjoyed in Japan, or anyone planning a trip and wanting to get excited beforehand. It would also be perfect for foodies who enjoy discovering new things and anyone looking for an unusual Christmas or birthday gift.

It may not be suitable for anyone with extreme allergies. I was able to enjoy it as a coeliac that has a seafood allergy, there is allergy information in the booklet but if you have a very serious allergy I would reach out first and ask before purchasing.
