If you’re trying to decide between Chengdu Panda Base and Panda Valley, we’ve now visited both—and they are more different from each other than we expected.
We visited the famous Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in June, arriving just before opening and spending more than four hours walking through the huge park. Two months later, we stayed overnight in Dujiangyan so we could be at Panda Valley first thing in the morning, where we spent around 3.5 hours watching giant pandas and red pandas in a much smaller, greener setting.
We enjoyed both, but for completely different reasons. Chengdu Panda Base is easier to reach, much larger and gives you far more panda viewing opportunities. Panda Valley felt quieter, more natural and more intimate—and if we were choosing purely on which experience we personally enjoyed most, we’d choose Panda Valley.
But that doesn’t mean Panda Valley is right for everyone.
In this guide we’ll compare crowds, pandas, red pandas, transport, walking, time needed and cost, and tell you exactly which we’d choose depending on your China itinerary.
Table of Contents
Our personal favourite: Panda Valley
We personally preferred Panda Valley because it felt quieter, greener and more relaxed, and we loved the more intimate panda experience.
Best for most first-time visitors: Chengdu Panda Base
Best if you only have 1–2 days: Chengdu Panda Base
But for most first-time visitors with only a couple of days in Chengdu, we’d recommend Chengdu Panda Base because it’s much easier to reach and offers a much larger panda experience.
Best if you have 4–5 days / Dujiangyan is already planned: Panda Valley
Chengdu Panda Base visited: June 2025 | Panda Valley visited: August 2026 | Information checked: October 2026

| Our personal favourite | ✅ Panda Valley |
Our quick verdict: If this is your first trip to Chengdu and you have limited time, visit Chengdu Panda Base. If you have an extra day, are already visiting Dujiangyan or prefer a quieter, more natural setting, choose Panda Valley. We personally preferred Panda Valley, but Chengdu Panda Base makes more sense for most short first-time visits.
Which Panda Base Did We Prefer?
Our favourite panda base was absolutely Panda Valley, here’s why.
Our favourite: Panda Valley
We preferred Panda Valley because it was smaller and set in a lush, mountain environment. The atmosphere felt more relaxed and was a little quieter when we visited. I felt like the pandas were easier to observe as the enclosures seemed to be shaped to give the visitors a good view. The red panda area felt almost immersive as you walk up a tiered area within a forest. The red pandas are able to roam freely around and you walk through their space. The visit felt less exhausting because it was a smaller area to walk and you could spend longer at each enclosure as there weren’t as many to get around. We really enjoyed the overall atmosphere. However, that doesn’t automatically make it the one we’d recommend for every traveller.
Who should still choose Chengdu Panda Base?
If you are visiting Chengdu for just a couple of days, staying centrally and it is your first-ever panda experience, I would suggest going to the Chengdu Panda Base. It would also make the most sense if you don’t want a day trip far from Chengdu and you want to visit the larger facility with the maximum opportunity to see pandas.
What Is the Difference Between Chengdu Panda Base and Panda Valley?
Chengdu Panda Base
The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding is the main Chengdu facility and only approximately 10km from Chengdu city centre. It supports conservation, research and breeding and has a large, 238-hectare visitor complex with museums, multiple panda zones and other animals. There are lots of food and drink stalls and restaurants and you could spend a whole day here.
Panda Valley
Officially called the Chengdu Field Research Center for Giant Pandas (Panda Valley), it is affiliated with the Chengdu Research Base and located about 50km from Chengdu.
It sits about 3km from central Dujiangyan and focuses on wild training and reintroduction of pandas to the environment. The setting is a much greener, more ecological setting that holds approximately 12 giant pandas and 20 red pandas.
Panda Valley is NOT the same place as the separate Dujiangyan Panda Base. They are two separate locations in Dujiangyan and at the time of our visit and writing in October 2026 Dujiangyan Panda Base was closed for renovation.

Our Experience at Chengdu Panda Base
We visited Chengdu Panda Base in June 2025 and loved it. It was our first time seeing pandas and it was so exciting! We started off early and caught a Didi there from Chengdu, it was about a 20-minute ride and we got there around 7:30am, there was already a line-up but entry went really smoothly.
We recommend booking before you arrive. Chengdu Panda Base currently requires online real-name reservations for most visitors, and popular dates can sell out.
Tip – We entered via the South Gate, but if we went again we’d take a Didi to the West Gate and walk downhill toward the South Gate to exit.

What We Saw at Chengdu Panda Base
We saw so many giant pandas at the Chengdu Panda Base, they were in various stages of eating, walking, rolling, climbing, scratching and, most commonly, sleeping! They were so cute that it really didn’t matter what they did, just seeing them was incredible.
We also saw a couple of red pandas, swans and peacocks. The golden snub-nosed monkey enclosure was closed when we visited and we didn’t see cubs on our visit, despite the Base being known for its breeding programme. What you see at the Chengdu Panda Base varies by season and the animals themselves.

Crowds at Chengdu Panda Base
We arrived at 7:30am and there was a small opening queue already forming. Crowds developed from 10am onwards and it became busier in the main viewing areas. There were a few places where the paths bottlenecked and it felt busier and patience was definitely required. Arriving early did help as we visited the main areas and then used the busier times for walking around the quieter attractions. The main base currently permits up to 85,000 visitors per day, and online real-name reservation is required for visitors.
Walking and Getting Around
The Chengdu Panda Base felt very large, we personally walked rather than taking the shuttle but next time I would either take the shuttle or I would start at the top and walk downhill seeing everything as I went. The amount of walking was considerable and without a tour we had to try and follow the maps and signs which means we did do a little backtracking here and there.
Current official sightseeing bus: CNY 30 per adult and they are valid for multiple listed stops on the same day. You can purchase the ticket for the sightseeing bus in Trip.com or on the day.
How Long We Spent
I’d allow 3–5 hours rather than trying to race through it. The space is really big and it does take time to get around and to enjoy these incredible animals. We spent about 4 hours here and really loved it, we walked everywhere so using the shuttle would save some time and honestly just makes sense.

Our Experience at Panda Valley
We visited Panda Valley in August 2026 after staying overnight in Dujiangyan specifically so we could be there early.
Getting to Panda Valley
We stayed in Dujiangyan and were up early, calling a Didi at 6:47 am, arriving at the entry by 6:56am and ride cost was CNY 11.20. It was during the school holiday period in China and there were already about 20 people waiting in line. The gates opened at 7:30am on our visit, check current hours before going as they do change seasonally.

What We Saw at Panda Valley
While the official Panda Valley profile currently states that the facility houses twelve giant pandas and twenty red pandas, we saw about nine giant pandas, including six that were actively eating and moving earlier in the morning. This was so exciting as their enclosures seemed designed at better angles so we could see the pandas while they were moving. Arriving early really paid off as the pandas started sleeping around 9am. We also saw three red pandas while we were there in the unique red panda free-ranging area.

What Panda Valley Felt Like
Panda Valley felt like we were walking around a forest due to the lush, beautiful landscaping and mountain location.
The atmosphere at Panda Valley was relaxed and quieter than when we visited Chengdu Panda Base, the size is smaller so although there is a slight uphill walk it isn’t as intense as the large amount of area that has to be covered at the Chengdu Panda Base.
It felt more natural and intimate, although we can’t objectively say the pandas are physically closer everywhere—it was simply how the experience felt to us.
How Long We Spent
Around 2.5–3.5 hours makes sense for most visitors who enjoy stopping to watch the animals rather than rushing. We actually spent 3.5 hours here but we did go through the whole area twice.

| First panda experience | Excellent | Excellent | Chengdu Panda Base for most |
| Short Chengdu stay | Best choice | Harder to justify | Chengdu Panda Base |
| Longer Sichuan stay | Great | Excellent addition | Panda Valley |
| Our personal preference | Loved it | Preferred | Panda Valley |
Which Has More Pandas?
If your priority is to see the greatest variety of giant pandas then Chengdu Panda Base is the clear choice. It is a much larger facility with a significantly bigger managed population.
Panda Valley’s official profile currently lists 12 giant pandas, but that does not mean all 12 will necessarily be visible during your visit. We saw around nine on ours.
Which Is Less Crowded?
Panda Valley was considerably quieter when we visited. We did visit Chengdu Panda Base in June 2025 and Panda Valley in August 2026 but Chengdu Base is much larger and internationally famous, attracting more crowds, particularly because of its proximity to Chengdu.

Which Is Better for Red Pandas?
Our honest opinion on which site is best to see the red pandas.
Chengdu Base
The red pandas at Chengdu Base are in an enclosure that is full of grass and trees but it still feels like an enclosure. There were large cement walls to stop them getting out. We saw a couple of red pandas here but they were running along the wall which wasn’t as nice as moving more naturally through the trees.
Panda Valley
The red panda area at Panda Valley was great, there was a large, tiered area set within the forest essentially and you could walk around and through it. The red pandas are in this free-ranging ecological red-panda zone running around on the trees as they please. We saw three ourselves and loved the experience, it felt quite natural.
Your verdict
For us, Panda Valley is better for red pandas, we loved how they seemed to have free range to roam around at their leisure, it was nice to see them in a more natural environment.

Which Has the Better Setting?
Chengdu Panda Base
The huge, developed grounds of the Chengdu Panda Base are more obviously developed with an extensive network of visitor infrastructure.
Panda Valley
Panda Valley’s habitat has deliberately been restored toward natural giant-panda vegetation and biodiversity. It feels like you are in the foothills of the mountains in a lush forest. There are streams and natural-looking planting around the walkway. It is smaller, so makes exploring on foot easier.
For atmosphere, we preferred Panda Valley.

Which Is Easier to Reach?
We visited each of these locations only a few months apart, this is how we felt about their locations.
Chengdu Panda Base
This is the easiest location to reach as it is about 10km from Chengdu and takes about a 20 minute Didi ride to reach. We found this so convenient to get to, making it fit perfectly into a short Chengdu trip. The Didi ride back to the city was a little harder to get and we had to wait longer to get picked up and choose a more premium car option.
Panda Valley
Officially, Panda Valley is about 50 km from Chengdu and roughly 3 km from central Dujiangyan. We think visiting both the town of Dujiangyan and Panda Valley make the most sense as you are already travelling to the area. We stayed overnight to see both at a slower rate. A Didi from the centre of Dujiangyan was very quick to Panda Valley. You could do it as a day trip from Chengdu but it would become more of a proper excursion or you can book a tour.
Verdict
Chengdu Panda Base wins easily on convenience, it is located so close to Chengdu that it makes a panda visit so much simpler.

Which Is Better If You Only Have One or Two Days in Chengdu?
Chengdu Panda Base is the best choice if you only have one or two days in Chengdu. It is located much closer to Chengdu, making it easy to visit the base and still sightsee in the city that afternoon. This is the best way to keep your itinerary efficient. See how we fit it into our Chengdu itinerary →
Check Chengdu Panda Base tickets on Klook →
Which Is Better If You Have 4–5 Days?
This is where we’d seriously consider Panda Valley, as you could dedicate a day or an overnight stay to Dujiangyan and see the ancient town, Blue Tears and be at the Panda Valley the following morning. See our one-night Dujiangyan itinerary →
Can You Visit Both Chengdu Panda Base and Panda Valley?
Yes, you can definitely visit both panda sites like we did but the real question is… should you?
For us it was pretty simple, we are panda lovers. I just can’t get enough of seeing these cute animals that seem so content just eating and rolling around. Each site offers a different experience as well. Chengdu Base = scale / quantity / flagship experience whereas Panda Valley = setting / atmosphere / quieter experience. But I would not recommend doing both on the same day.
Could You Visit Both in One Day?
Technically it is possible, but we wouldn’t recommend it. Firstly they are located about 50km from each other which means you will be rushing to fit in the two panda experiences. Both have a better chance of viewing active pandas first thing in the morning so you will miss out on this time at one of the locations. There isn’t much benefit to racing around on one day to see both, it would be better to spend longer and really enjoy your time at one. The best idea is to combine Panda Valley with Dujiangyan and the main panda base with Chengdu.

Which Is Better for Families?
This will depend on the type of family and the experiences they prefer but this is our opinion after visiting both.
Chengdu Panda Base advantages
It is much easier to travel to the Chengdu Panda Base due to the close proximity to Chengdu. There is more infrastructure at the site with lots of food and drink options, an entertainment area with performances. There are many more pandas and lots of enclosures to see as well as a cheap and convenient sightseeing shuttle to get around more easily which would be essential with kids.
Chengdu Panda Base Disadvantages
The Chengdu Panda Base is enormous which means a lot more walking and there are more crowds as it is the most famous panda site.
Panda Valley advantages
The main advantages of Panda Valley are the size, it is smaller making it easier and less exhausting to walk and see everything. Due to the location away from Chengdu it was calmer when we visited. The size makes it easier to navigate with children.
Disadvantages of Panda Valley
It is located considerably further from Chengdu, making it a longer day trip for families.
For families with limited time, Chengdu Panda Base makes the most sense. For families already staying in Dujiangyan or happy to make a full excursion, Panda Valley may actually feel easier once you’re inside. There are also organised day tours you can take which might feel easier.

Which Is Better for Photography?
We loved photographing the pandas, they are so cute and funny that it becomes pretty mesmerising. We found the Chengdu Panda Base better for the sheer amount of pandas, each with a different personalities and behaviours. They were all named and some were very famous in China.
Panda Valley was better for the greener backgrounds, a more natural-feeling setting. The free-ranging red pandas and in general less competition for each photo spot.
We preferred our Panda Valley photos overall because of the surroundings. It looked more natural and the landscaping was prettier.

What Time Should You Visit Either Panda Base?
We would personally arrive at opening for either location. At Panda Valley, several pandas were actively eating and moving when we entered, with many beginning to settle down and sleep around 9 am. At Chengdu Panda Base, arriving early helped us get ahead of some of the crowds. The opening time for both changes due to the seasons so you do need to check before you plan your day.
Chengdu Panda Base Tickets vs Panda Valley Tickets
| Booking | Chengdu Panda Base | Panda Valley |
|---|---|---|
| Do you need a separate ticket? | Yes | Yes |
| Is your passport needed to enter? | Yes | Yes |
| Should I book ahead? | Yes | Yes |
DIY or Guided Tour?
We visited both panda facilities without a tour and found DIY was manageable for us, however a Chengdu Panda Base guide would be useful if you want conservation information, English explanation and someone to handle transport and to navigate the enormous park!
🚐 Prefer everything organised? See the Chengdu Panda Base English half-day tour on Klook →
For Panda Valley we think staying overnight in Dujiangyan is an easy option but if you are trying to fit it all into a day trip from Chengdu or are travelling with older family members or children a tour may make it an easier experience, this one includes a red panda experience.
What We’d Do Differently at Chengdu Panda Base:
Use the West Gate
We would make sure we entered through the West Gate and walked downhill towards the South Gate to exit. I would still arrive early before opening time to help beat the crowds regardless of where you enter.
We’d Consider the Shuttle
We would definitely take the shuttle as it would have made our experience there so much easier, we walked for miles around the park before realising that we could have just used the shuttles that run around to each location.
We’d Allow at Least Four Hours
The amount of time we would need was unclear before we visited. Now we would absolutely keep a minimum of four hours available for our visit.
What We’d Do Differently at Panda Valley
Change Where We Stayed
We combined our trip to Panda Valley with exploring the ancient town and Blue Tears at Dujiangyan, which we would do again. However we stayed inside the ancient town which wasn’t necessary. I would change this and stay at the Holiday Inn Dujiangyan Ancient Town by IHG for its location near Lidui Park Station and easy walking into the ancient town.
We’d Pre-Book Tickets
Don’t miss out on the day or time slot you want, pre-book your Panda Valley tickets as soon as you know what day you will visit. You cannot buy tickets at the gate so make sure to have them already purchased. You will definitely need your passport as your ticket will be attached to this.

How Much Does Each Panda Experience Cost?
These are the actual costs we paid to visit the panda bases, while prices and times can vary with seasonality it should be a rough guide for you to plan your trip.
Chengdu Panda Base
| Expense | What we paid |
|---|---|
| Ticket (per person) | 60.50 CNY / US$9.04 |
| Didi there (economy car) for the car | 33.8 CNY / US$5.05 |
| Didi (premium car) back to city for the car | 34.90 CNY / US$5.22 |
| Total | 129.20 CNY / US$19.31 |
Panda Valley
| Expense | What we paid |
|---|---|
| Ticket (per persom) | 77.09 CNY / US$11.52 |
| Didi hotel → Valley for the economy car | 11.20 CNY / US$1.67 |
| Didi return for economy car | 10 CNY / US$1.49 |
| On-the-ground total | 98.29 CNY / US$14.68 |
The price will change if you are visiting Panda Valley from central Chengdu as this trip carries additional train, taxi and time costs, so comparing ticket prices alone is misleading.
So, Which Panda Base Should You Choose?
| Choose… | If… |
|---|---|
| Chengdu Panda Base | First China panda visit |
| Chengdu Panda Base | Only 1–2 days in Chengdu |
| Chengdu Panda Base | Want maximum panda variety |
| Chengdu Panda Base | Don’t want a day trip |
| Panda Valley | You prefer a quieter experience |
| Panda Valley | You prefer greener surroundings |
| Panda Valley | Red pandas are a priority |
| Panda Valley | You’re already going to Dujiangyan |
| Panda Valley | You have 4–5 days |
| Both | You’re a serious panda fan |
What would we choose? Panda Valley was our favourite experience overall. But on a first two-day trip to Chengdu, we’d still choose Chengdu Panda Base.

Chengdu Panda Base vs Panda Valley FAQs
Is Panda Valley better than Chengdu Panda Base?
For us it was, we really loved seeing the pandas in a beautiful environment that felt more natural and intimate. It may not be the best choice for everyone though, particularly if you have small children or a short time in Chengdu.
Which panda base has more pandas?
Chengdu Panda Base has a much larger giant-panda population. Panda Valley’s official profile currently lists 12 giant pandas and 20 red pandas, although not every animal will necessarily be visible during your visit.
Which panda base is less crowded?
Panda Valley was much quieter when we visited in August, we went to Chengdu Panda Base in June and it was much busier.
Which is easier to reach from Chengdu?
Chengdu Panda Base is much easier to reach from Chengdu and it is the main site that most tourists will visit. It makes the best choice if you only have a day or two in Chengdu.
Which is better for red pandas?
We liked seeing the red pandas at Panda Valley best, they had a more natural feeling enclosure and were able to roam as they pleased.
Which is better for children?
The best panda site for children is very dependent on your situation. Some may prefer a longer day trip with a quieter and more natural surroundings. The easier and bigger population of pandas is at the Chengdu Panda Base and there is a shuttle you can use to get around so this makes the chance of seeing pandas better at Chengdu Panda Base.
Which is better for photography?
We preferred Panda Valley for photography because the greener surroundings and more natural-feeling setting made the backgrounds prettier. Chengdu Panda Base gave us more individual pandas and behaviours to photograph.
How long do you need at Chengdu Panda Base?
We spent about 4 hours; so I would suggest between 3–5 to give yourself enough time to see everything.
How long do you need at Panda Valley?
We spent 3.5 hours at Panda Valley, so around 2.5–3.5 hours should be enough for most people to see everything.
Can you visit both panda bases in one day?
Technically yes, but I wouldn’t recommend it as it would be a really long day and you would have lots of time in transit and less time at the pandas.
Do Chengdu Panda Base tickets include Panda Valley?
No. Both Chengdu Panda Base and Panda Valley require separate tickets.
Is Panda Valley the same as Dujiangyan Panda Base?
No. These are both different places in Dujiangyan, however Dujiangyan Panda Base was closed for renovation when we checked in October 2026.
What is the best time to see pandas?
On our visits, early morning gave us the most active panda viewing. At Panda Valley, several began settling down around 9 am. Animal behaviour varies, so this isn’t guaranteed.
Do you need a tour?
You don’t need a tour, we did both independently and it was fine, there are some things that we would do differently such as using the sightseeing bus but on the whole it was fine. Using a tour would have helped us save the time we wasted getting lost, translating and walking when we really didn’t have to.

Final Thoughts — Which Panda Experience Was Better?
Before visiting both, we assumed Chengdu Panda Base would obviously be the better panda experience simply because it is the famous one. We really enjoyed it—it is enormous, you can see a huge variety of pandas and it’s incredibly easy to add to a Chengdu itinerary.
But Panda Valley surprised us more. It felt greener, calmer and more intimate, and we loved spending the morning slowly watching the pandas and red pandas rather than trying to cover such a huge park.
If we could personally revisit only one tomorrow, we’d choose Panda Valley. But if a friend were visiting Chengdu for the first time with only two days, we’d send them to Chengdu Panda Base.
Whichever you choose, book an early visit and give yourself time to actually stop and watch the pandas rather than racing between enclosures.
