What to do in Bedugul, the best secret in Bali!

by Kelly

Bedugul is full of surprises! We initially came here as I had seen a picture of the two lakes and wanted to see them. What we found was one of the best destinations in Bali!

Where is Bedegul?

Located approximately 45km north of Ubud and set around three big lakes it’s a lush location that is not yet overrun with tourists!

How many days for Bedugul?

We stayed 3 nights but could have stayed 4 or 5! We just fell in love with the area and there’s lots to see.

How to get around Bedugul?

Hire a scooter! It’s the easiest way to get around. We hired our scooter Ron Hilltop Bali Motors and recommend them very highly. They looked after us very well and their scooters were in excellent condition. If you hire for 2 or more days they’ll drop your bike off and pick up from your hotel. Make sure to bring or buy a poncho to wear while driving your scooter, we waited too long and got caught in many showers before finally buying one! All the locals have them in their scooters ready.

If you don’t want to drive a scooter you can hire a guide. They’ll drive you around to waterfalls and show you the way down to them taking pictures of you also.

Where to stay

Kabinku Bali

Kabinku Bali is my favourite stay of our time in Bali!  It was perfectly located to explore Bedegul and the cleanest hotel we stayed in. The staff are incredibly helpful and friendly, their attention to detail is so thorough. The manager is lovely and will aim to make your stay a happy one, he really cares for his guests. The rooms here are wonderful! They are very clean, beautifully made and well laid out. The furniture is solid and of high quality. The bathroom is very clean, well equipped and has excellent hot water! You can check out the excellent KabinKu hotel here.

Kabinku Bali Bedegul accomodation

Each little cabin feels like your private, cost home. It was a joy to stay here and we highly recommend it! Breakfast at their restaurant is included I your stay and it’s delicious, they even altered the meal for me so I could have it gluten free with rice instead of toast.

What to do in Bedugul

Visit the lakes at sunrise.

Both lakes are beautiful at sunrise, you can take a boat tour or just watch from your spot around the lake. Check out this tour, we think it’s the best!

Waterfalls!

There are so many waterfalls in the Bedugul / Munduk area. We rented a scooter and visited one or two a day. They aren’t away easy to get to but so worth it, these were the ones we saw-

Munduk Waterfall

A pretty waterfall that is easy to get to. Park your scooter at the entry and an easy walk down about 50 stairs and you’ll find it. You can walk along the path below to find a cute bamboo bridge and another smaller waterfall also!

Banyu Wana Amertha Waterfall

The was one of the best waterfalls we saw in Bali. It costs 40k to enter but you’ll get access to 3 waterfalls. The first is really lovely, there’s a nice bamboo bridge and lots of angles for pictures!

Walk around the corner from here and you’ll find the second one, here you can walk behind the waterfall and experience it coming down in front of you.

Back to the main path and you’ll be taken down further to the largest of the 4 waterfalls. It’s really big and crashes just in front of you. You can swim in the pool here and sit in the rocks. I found a little offering on the rocks sitting precariously under the falls, it was so sweet.

There is a final smaller waterfall on the way out but it bucketed down rain at this point so we made a dash back up hill. It’s generally not great to be going down hill when the weather turns as it comes really slippery and can be flooded.

To get to these falls you can walk in for about 1.5km down hill or take a motorbike ride with a local, it’s 50k IDR return trip or just get one back up for 30k IDR.

Melting Waterfall

We visited this fall and got caught in an unexpected rain storm! Mike did some very good driving to get us through it! We took shelter in a small Warung for a while until the rain stopped and ate some great food.

Melanting  waterfall is really pretty. It’s at the bottom of a long path, you can ride your scooter to the parking lot then walk down to the falls. This is a big waterfall that’s spread out and has multiple falls flowing over the rock face. It’s really nice and not too hard to get to once you are going down the stairs. Tickets cost 20k.

Fiji waterfall

We were recommended this waterfall by a NZ couple we met who had visited almost every waterfall in the area. They just loved it and you can see why. It’s massive! There’s about 4 falls included in the ticket for Fiji, and you have to go with a guide which is included in the ticket cost. 150-250k dele ding on how far through you go.

Bali Botanical Gardens

The Bali Botanic Gardens are a beautiful and huge garden set in a park. It’s similar to Stanley Park in Vancouver or Hyde Park in London. A massive expanse of green fields with different gardens scattered throughout. We visited the cactus garden, orchid garden, the berg garden and the throat plant walkway. They were all intricately arranged and beautifully kept. To get around you can hire the tour cart to drive you or hire an e scooter or push bike. Alternatively we just walked. This is a perfect place to come for some peace and quietx

Tip – learn some words in Balinese, it’s different to Indonesian. Instead of Trina Kashi say Matur Sukma – thank you or for short , Suksma – thanks they will appreciate it!

Tamblingan Lake

Drive down to Tamblingan Lake for sunset, here around evening time you’ll find locals hanging out, camping, Head to Camp Tamblingan on google maps and you’ll find the spot.

Munduk rice terrace

Munduk rice terraces were much less touristic than those we saw in Ubud. There was almost no one else here and we had it all to ourselves.

Where to eat

Kabinku Bali! Their restaurant is excellent. We had both breakfast and dinner here and loved everything we tried! Well made and clean it’s a must visit while in Bedugul.

We also ate at a ton of the little restaurants around the lake, we just stopped off and sat on the cliff edge in these cute little huts while looking over the lake!
