Mirissa Beach in the town of Mirissa is a must visit in Sri Lanka, make sure to add it to your Sri Lanka itinerary. We drove ourselves around Sri Lanka in a tuk tuk and it was the best experience! If you need any planning information or have any questions leave a comment, we are happy to help!
Coconut Tree Hill
Down one end, at the end of the third bay you’ll find the famous Coconut Tree Hill. The view from the hill is gorgeous and really lives up to its reputation. There are loads of palm trees and the blue ocean just wraps around this little outcrop of land. Surfers head out from here and you can sit and watch them. You’ll also get to watch the procession of people that trickle in all day to get their photos!
It can be a little confusing finding it. If you go early there are some large blue gates which are closed, I’m not sure if they open them up later on or if they closed it to stop people driving up there. We found this sign painted on the alleyway and walked down. At the bottom you’ll see the gates, we just walked up between the wire fence and the big tree, you follow it around to the left and you’re there!
The little island opposite Mirissa Beach
I’m not sure what this is actually called, but at the end of Mirissa Beach there is a little island. At low tide you can walk across and climb up the hill to see the view from here. It is really fun getting out there (wear a swimsuit because you will get wet!) but you will definitely get a little wet. The views are great and there will be heaps of others doing the same thing, particularly around sunset.
Eat at the funky cafes along Mirissa Beach
There are tons of funky little cafes all around Mirissa Beach. You could really go on a cafe crawl here and try a different one each meal. Shady Lane, Starbeans and The Yellow Cafe are some favourites but there are tons more! If you are after some local food try out Our World Wifi Cafe. It is directly off the beach and is literally a shack. There are 2 men working there and meals are prepared fresh. They were really worried about the wait time but the kottu and fried rice were worth it. They even understood what gluten free is which is always a winner in my books! (check out my guide to Gluten Free Sri Lanka)
