Location and getting around
St Moritz is in Switzerland closer to the Italian border. It is easy to get between the two via train or bus!
The Glacier Express stops here which is how we arrived and it was an epic journey! We had a Swiss Travel Pass and it was the best way to get around. This trip is one you must do at least once in your life. The train station is just on the edge of town and there are regular buses to take you in to town. With the Swiss Travel Pass you can take trains and buses without worrying about buying tickets.
This blog was in collaboration with Switzerland Tourism and Swiss Travel System. All opinions are our own, we are excited to show you this incredible country!
History of St Moritz
St Moritz is one of the oldest resort destinations and ski resorts. It began in 1864 when a hotelier began promoting it as the perfect year round destination – summer or winter! He was right. Guests began taking winter vacations here and staying Christmas through to Easter. It has been visited by celebrities since the early 1900s and the town shows its history in the beautiful buildings. Perched at the base of the Swiss mountains and around a lake spending a day or two here is easy…more if you are a skier!
It has also held the Winter Olympics twice, once in 1928 and again in 1948. Celebrities have visited St Moritz since the early 1900s and the exclusive stores in town are a testament to the rich tourists that it attracts. This doesn’t mean it is out of touch for regular visitors! We loved our time here, soaking up the history of the town and the beauty of the landscape.
Where to stay in St Moritz
We stayed at Hotel Sonne Pizzeria and Restaurant and it was perfect! An easy 8 minute bus ride from the train station and there is a bus stop across the road from the hotel.
We loved our huge room, spacious bathroom and incredible outdoor area! The restaurant is excellent as well, they serve the best aperol spritz we have ever had and the most delicious food.
Take a look at the cute town
The town of St Moritz is very pretty, there are old buildings to enjoy and retro signs to obsess over. There are tons of expensive shops with beautiful windows for some great window shopping too.
The leaning tower
There is a leaning tower with a graveyard behind and it is a really curious place. It felt like we were a world away from the glitzy shops and town below.
St Moritz Lake
This was our favourite place! Out of town but only a 2 minute walk from Hotel Sonne Pizzeria and Restaurant the lake is the perfect place to spend some time. We were there at sunset but it would be equally beautiful at sunrise or for a picnic through the day.
Activities
There are tons of activities in St Moritz. If you are there during summer there are great hiking options and during winter the skiing is excellent. We didn’t have enough time on this trip but we hope to return to do both!
We loved our time in St Moritz and can’t wait to return. Please leave a comment if you have any questions at all, we are happy to help!
