How to get to Lauterbrunnen?

We took the train from Lucerne to Lauterbrunnen it was simple and very straightforward. The trains in Switzerland are clean and efficient.

We downloaded the SBB app and used it to book our trains. You can also do it on their website or in person at the train stations, there are people there to help you as well. You will see the most beautiful views as you go by train. It really is the best way to get around Switzerland. If you have a Swiss Travel Pass the trains are included! All you need to do is buy the one ticket and show it when asked by a conductor! No more buying individual tickets, it really is so convenient.

You can drive to Lauterbrunnen but when you are there you don’t really need a car. We walked almost everywhere! There is an RV park close to the town where you can stay if you have one! They have cheaper camping options as well.

Where to stay in Lauterbrunnen?

Lauterbrunnen has so many excellent options for accommodation. These are the places we think are the best options to stay:

Budget: Valley Hostel, Camping Jungfrau, BASE Cafe, Alpine Base Hostel – Adults only, Hostel Schutzenbach Backpackers for 18-35’s

Midrange: Hotel Oberland, Hotel Schützen Lauterbrunnen, Chalet Rosa B&B, Chalet Elza

Luxe: Apartment Breithorn – beautiful waterfall valley home, Breathtaking Waterfall Apartment

We chose to stay at the Valley Hostel. It fit our budget and has the most spectacular view from our room.

We were on a floor with 2 bathrooms and toilet and 3 other rooms. It was very clean and well run. Our room had a set of bunk beds and a cute little balcony to watch the stunning hills. We paid approximately $130 AUD per night for our room. This was a reasonable price for the area and time of year.

When should I visit Lauterbrunnen?

The best time is between May/June and September. We were there during May and it was just incredible. The temperature was cool in the mornings and evenings with warm days. There was very little rain and the sun lit up the green hills and snow capped mountains. I am sure that it would be beautiful in any month but we were very happy in May.

This website has the weather forecast for Lauterbrunnen which is useful.

How much time should I plan for Lauterbrunnen?

We planned 2 full days. It was fabulous and I would have liked 1 or 2 more. There were some other little villages I would liked to explore and to take the cable car up the mountain (it was out of order while we were there).

Is food expensive in Lauterbrunnen?

We heard many stories about how expensive the food was. Honestly we didn’t find this to be the case at all. There are many cafes, pubs and restaurants in Lauterbrunnen. They all looked lovely and quaint and the pricing wasn’t too high at all.

There is also a little convenience store. We chose to buy basics and cook up a meal in our accommodation which had an excellent shared kitchen space. When we are spending a little more on accommodation we will often do this. We loved it in Lauterbrunnen especially as the scenery is so beautiful we would rather pack a picnic and eat outside! We shopped at the Coop Lauterbrunnen almost daily and picked up lovely picnic supplies, dinner supplies, drinks. The pricing was excellent and the range was great!

Can you buy gluten free food in Lauterbrunnen?

Yes! I was able to purchase gluten free food at the Coop in Lauterbrunnen. I bought crackers for my picnics, biscuits, cheeses and meats. There was fresh produce, gluten free pastas, sauces and potato rosti you could buy and cook up.. I became completely obsessed with Milka chocolate and bought it at every chance I could!

Why you should visit spectacular Lauterbrunnen Valley-

These are our favourite places in Lauterbrunnen that you really can’t miss! Let me answer why you should visit Lauterbrunnen Valley…

1. Staubbach Falls

You can’t miss Staubbach Falls, they are right in the middle of town! You will see this waterfall glittering in the sunlight. It cascades from the cliff face and looks like it is falling directly behind a house.

Usually you can walk up and behind the waterfall which looks amazing, unfortunately it was closed when we were there for maintenance.

2. Trummelbach Falls

These falls are hidden inside the valley walls. There is a charge of 3CHF‎ to go inside. They are a series of ten glacier-fed waterfalls inside the mountain which is accessed by a tunnel-funicular. This was built 1913 along with stairs, and lighting. There is an elevator that takes you up and inside the cliff. You walk up inside the cliff to the highest point and descend slowly following the water. The sound is thunderous and you feel immersed with the valley and the waterfall. Definitely an interesting experience. It does get a bit slippery and I saw some children get a little afraid, make sure your footwear is grippy. You can catch the Lauterbrunnen bus there from town which only takes 10 minutes or enjoy the walk out there.

3. Lauterbrunnen–Trümmelbachfälle–Stechelberg Hike

This is a beautiful and mostly flat hike that takes about an hour and a half. It starts in Lauterbrunnen and will lead you to the Trummelbach Falls and on to Stechelberg. It is a stunning walk and easy to access to all.

4. Wengen

We took the train up to the little town of Wengen and it was the most incredibly beautiful train journey. I think it may be the most scenic we have ever been on. You will catch a cute old yellow and green train which will rattle its way up the valley to Wengen. Once there you can stroll the cute town and take some hikes that start there. This is one of my top reasons why you should visit spectacular Lauterbrunnen Valley!

5. Wengen benches (Bänkli)

In Switzerland, Bänkli (benches) are a tradition, a cultural heritage. Benches are positioned to show the best views. They have been the sites of many happy moments and offered places of solace.

Our favourite was the Staubbachbench in Wengen. This is one of the most beauitful benches in the area. It only took us about 30-40 minutes to reach walking from the town. Here you will take in the stunning view of Staubbach Falls. The view here is one of the landmarks of Lauterbrunnen. We brought with us some cheese, bread and meat and made a picnic to enjoy the views.

6. Wengen – Staubbach bench hike

This is the pretty hike we did to reach the bench. It is mostly flat and very well paved. The hike takes you around the village of Wengen and through to the countryside. You will pass by beautiful farms and farm animals. We didn’t see another person while walking out here. It was pure bliss to be surrounded by such incredible scenery. On the way back we detoured in to the lower part of the village and is a definite reason why you should visit spectacular Lauterbrunnen Valley!

We loved our time in Lauterbrunnen and know you will too. I hope to go back and get to Murren, take the cable cars up the mountain and do some more hikes. It was the most beautiful place and we highly recommend it! I hoped I answered the question “Why you should visit spectacular Lauterbrunnen Valley?” for you!
