Where is Costa Maya?
Costa Maya is a small area along the coastline of Mexico in the state of Quintana Roo. It is bordered by the Caribbean Sea and stretches about 100km from Xcalak to the southern part of Sian Ka’an. Mahahual is the main town which is closet to the cruise ship port at Costa Maya and visited by both tourists and cruise passengers.
Why snorkel at Costa Maya?
There is a reef just a 10 minute boat ride from the Costa Maya coast, in no time you will be able to be in the water and looking for fish!
Why choose Mar Adentro Diving Mahahual?
Mar Adentro Diving Mahahual is the best dive shop to take you out snorkelling the Costa Maya! They are located on the beach path and you will walk 2 minutes to their boat and only ride 10minutes to the snorkel site. Their instructors are caring and constantly checking in on their guests to make sure they are comfortable and feel safe. They are also very caring toward the environment in which they work. We were instructed how to approach any animals that we might see so we did not disturb them or cause distress.
The snorkeling Costa Maya!
We walked up to Mar Adentro Diving from our accommodation at Inkanto Luxury Hotel. It was an easy 2.5km stroll along the beach path. We arrived about 8:30am and met our instructors. They were so lovely and before long we were settled in with coffee and biscuits while the rest of our group arrived!
We jumped on the boat and while we were riding out to the spot we were briefed on what we could see. The instructors checked on the confidence of the guests and their previous experience. Once we were put in groups and everyone was made to feel confident, we were informed of snorkelling etiquette. Making sure everyone was aware of the proper behaviours. These included not touching coral, staying away from the animals and not crowding them.
In the water
We jumped in the water and were ready to snorkel! Following our group leader we slowly swam over the lovely coral and around the bombers. There were stunning displays of fan corals, fishing swimming in and around them as well as a huge sting ray and some turtles! That’s right not just one but multiple turtles. We were able to hang back and watch them for quite a while!
Heading back to shore
We snorkelled for about an hour and then headed back to the boat and shore. On the way we were given pineapple to enjoy while we talked about what we had seen. Everyone was really excited and were thrilled to see turtles. It was such a lovely trip!
Back at the dive store we dried off and said thanks to our instructors. Leaving we were so pleased we decided to take the trip. It is always great to experience different aspects of a destination and this is one that we loved! We really recommend this trip to anyone heading to Mahahual and the Costa Maya. Mar Adentro Diving was the perfect team to book with and we are so glad we did!
