Cheapest way to get to Kuala Lumpur from Kuala Lumpur International Airport KLIA

Looking for the cheapest way to get to Kuala Lumpur from Kuala Lumpur International Airport KLIA? We found it at Star Shuttle. When we checked out the prices and ways to get to the centre of KL from the airport I was slightly concerned! It looked like it was going to be more expensive than we first hoped. We were planning on making this a very low cost stop over!

I searched around for ages and compared the options shuttles, trains or Grab! Finally narrowing it down and deciding on shuttle. If you are interested in our Kuala Lumpur stopover adventure, read all about it here!

The other options to get to KL city centre

The train is faster but costs more.  Kuala Lumpur has a really good rail system, the MRT and LRT.  It is clean and air conditioned and it also runs from the airport to the the city in about half an hour for the KLIA Express to KL Sentral, the central train station in the city. It costs approximately 35 MYR per ticket.

Grab was too expensive at about 65 MYR. It was the fastest option though so if you are short on time and not money it may be the way for you!

There is also a great transfer with Get Your Guide, it is a shared mini bus and will take you to your accommodation, check it out here.

Why we chose to go with Star Shuttle:

We ended up going with Star Shuttle due to the price and the time factor. We could afford the time and the price was definitely right! At only 12 MYR per ticket how could we refuse? It is the cheapest way to Kuala Lumpur from the KLIA Airport. There’s also the option of paying 18 MYR and getting dropped right at your accommodation. I  google mapped the bus stop and it was only a short walk to our hostel so we went with the 12 MYR option.

It took just over an hour, was almost empty and very clean. We had two seats each to ourselves and could stretch out after the flight. The seats reclined, had decent air conditioning and even a power point to charge your device if needed.

It drops you off at Pudu Sentral which is right near China Town. If you are staying in Bukit Bintang you could take a Grab which is pretty cheap for a short ride. The other alternative is to purchase the 18 MYR ticket and they will drop you at your accommodation and this might be more convenient.

How to find Star Shuttle at KLIA Terminal 2:

When you land head through immigration and then straight out the exit.  You will end up in the front area where there are shops aplenty. Just keep walking straight through to the outer exit and you will see an escalator going down on the left hand side to level 1.

Head down the escalator and you will find your transport options. There are taxis stations and ticket boxes inside. To find the Star Shuttle just head straight outside the doors. Here you will see all the big shuttle buses. Find the Star Shuttle bus and you simply pay the driver for your ticket.

What to do with luggage on the bus

If you have large bags you can store them in the under carriage but as we were travelling with carry on we just put them on the spare seat next to us. It was a great way to relax and see the city as we moved through it to the drop off station which is at Pudu Sentral. Make sure you take note of the address as it has changed and used to be MyDin.

This is where you will find Star Shuttle through the doors outside on Level 1 at KLIA Terminal 2.

How to find Star Shuttle at Pudu Sentral:

The address you will be dropped at is 12, Jalan Pudu Kuala Lumpur City Centre. This is where you would also catch the shuttle back to KLIA. When you are heading back to the airport be sure to give this address to your Grab or taxi driver. If you don’t they will drop you at MyDin and you will have a walk up the road with your bags to Pudu Sentral. Unfortunately we made this mistake and had a run around the city to find the actual stop!

Getting from Pudu Sentral to accommodation:

We decided to walk from Pudu Sentral to our accommodation as it was quite close. Otherwise we would have just upgraded to the hotel drop off for convenience. I am not the best map reader and a really great tip is to download the app Maps Me. Make sure to upload the country you are going to on it before you leave home. This is an offline version of google maps and works incredibly well. I was travelling with no data and to be able to direct us to the accommodation was simple and easy, there is an arrow pointer that shows if you are following the route correctly so you can’t go wrong!
