Dominican Republic Itinerary (7, 10 & 14 Day Travel Guide)

If you are visiting the Dominican Republic and never leave your all inclusive resort you are honestly doing it wrong! Of course the beautiful beaches of Punta Cana are hard to pull yourself away from but if you don’t explore just a little more you will miss the colourful historic streets of Santo Domingo and the relaxed local vibe and stunning day trips of Bayahibe.

We spent 10 days in the Dominican Republic and this is the itinerary we wished we had before we went! Here we will show you how to balance relaxed resort and beach time with exploring culutre and history. We give you a plan for a 7, 0 or 14 day Dominican Republic Itinerary which includes the best route, where to stay, what to do and how to avoid common mistakes. Where Is The Dominican Republic + Why Visit?

The Dominican Republic is an island located in the Caribbean Sea and shares a land border with Haiti. It is located near Cuba and Puerto Rico and is the second largest Caribbean nation (by area) after Cuba. It is easily accessible by air, with the 2 main international airports located at Punta Cana and Santo Domingo.

The main reason you will visit is to soak up the beautiful beaches and local culture and vibe. The island is rich in history as well as varied landscapes, making it a very cool destination.

Your Exact 10-Day Dominican Republic Route

This is our exact 10 day Dominican Republic route that we used when we visited and it was excellent! We had a perfect number of days in each location, giving us a taste of what they offer and where we would want to return to.

Route: Punta Cana → Bayahibe → Santo Domingo

This order works as you fly into one and leave from the other without having to return to the starting point. You could also reverse it and start in Santo Domingo and end in Punta Cana if the flights work best for you that way. This route also gives you some variety, not all beaches but you can experience the culture and history of the island.

10 Day Dominican Republic Itinerary

DAYS 1–3: Punta Cana

There are so many things to do in Punta Cana, we fell in love with the beaches here, spending long days swimming and soaking up the sun and sand. There are some great local eateries and stunning beachfront resorts. This is the town to stay in and enjoy everything that a gorgeous all inclusive resort has to offer.

You can choose to stay in a resort or a local hotel if you are looking for a budget option. There are lots of sun beds on the beaches but there are some spots where it is clear and you can throw a towel down.

Check out our Punta Cana Itinerary for details on what to do including the best excursions from Punta Cana. If you want an incredible day trip we did this Saona Island day trip and it was excellent. The day trip is so worth it, you can get picked up from Punta Cana, Bayahibe or Santo Domingo.

DAYS 4–8: Bayahibe

Bayahibe Dominican Republic is a hidden gem that is so underrated. We loved visiting this town and experiencing the easy going walkable town and local, authentic vibe. This is why we think it is better than Punta Cana for some travellers and totally worth checking out. We have written a post of the things to do in Bayahibe, our favourite of which is Dominicus Beach which is one of the best beaches in the area for those relaxed beach days.

Saona Island Day Trip

The Saona Island Tour is one of our favourite thing to do in Bayahibe, it is one of the prettiest places in the Dominican Republic and a must on your itinerary. We spent a day out on a Saona Island Tour, exploring the island and loved it! If you want a Saona Island day trip experience, this is the one we did and loved! The day trip is so worth it, you can get picked up from Punta Cana, Bayahibe or Santo Domingo.

DAYS 9–10: Santo Domingo

You will spend most of your time in Zona Colonial and there are lots of things to do here. You will get to explore the history and culture of the Dominican Republic in this walkable old town while soaking up the cafes, old streets and architecture.

We spent 2 days here and have written up a full Santo Domingo Itinerary with all the information you need to enjoy your time in the capital.

How To Get Around The Dominican Republic

Getting around the Dominican Republic is easy if you are hiring a car and driving. We didn’t and used buses and Uber which was a little trickier but still totally possible.

Dominican Republic Travel Tips

Transport from Punta Cana was difficult as buses leave from the Punta Cana Airport instead of the town, meaning you have to get back out there. Our work around was to organise a ride from Punta Cana to Bayahibe. We checked Uber and it was pretty expensive, then we tried In Driver and posted our price on that. Drivers got back to us and offered their price, eventually we found a driver we liked and it was a great choice. He was reliable, the car was new and clean and he was a good driver.

To get from Bayahibe to Santo Domingo it is about 145km drive. There are big buses you can take which is what we did, however they only leave from La Romana 25km away. We grabbed an Uber from Bayahibe to La Romana to catch the bus which leaves about every half hour and you just buy your ticket when you get there.

Uber

Uber doesn’t really work outside of the airport areas. We caught one from the Puna Cana Airport to Punta Cana which cost us 273 DOP. To get Uber from the airport

Uber didn’t work well in Bayahibe as they rarely if ever picked up the ride. We got lucky and were able to get one from our accomodation to La Romana but this was after 3 drivers cancelled on us. It really is unreliable and the drivers would message to change the price after taking the fare.

Local Buses

We used local buses to get around in Bayahibe, they cost about 50DOP per person. They can get really full but are the easiest and cheapest way to get around.

Cost Of 10 Days In Dominican Republic Itinerary (Mid-Range Budget)

If you’re planning a 10-day trip to the Dominican Republic and want a balance of comfort, good food, and memorable experiences (without going full luxury), this is a realistic mid-range budget based on our route through Punta Cana, Bayahibe and Santo Domingo.

Accommodation (Biggest Expense)

  • Punta Cana (3 nights, resort): $180–$350 per night
  • Bayahibe (5 nights, boutique/beach hotel): $90–$180 per night
  • Santo Domingo (2 nights, Zona Colonial hotel): $80–$160 per night

👉 Total (10 nights): $1,200 – $2,500 USD per couple ($600 – $1,250 per person)

Tip:
You’ll get the best value by mixing one resort stay with smaller boutique hotels—this keeps costs down and gives you a more local experience.

Food & Drinks

  • Punta Cana (often all-inclusive): Included or $30–$60/day if not
  • Bayahibe: $25–$50/day
  • Santo Domingo: $20–$40/day

Total (10 days): $250 – $500 USD per person

Tip:
Local restaurants in Bayahibe and Santo Domingo are significantly cheaper (and better) than resort dining.

Transport (Between Destinations)

  • Private transfer Punta Cana → Bayahibe: $80–$120
  • Bayahibe → Santo Domingo: $100–$150
  • Santo Domingo → airport: $30–$50
  • Ubers/taxis locally: $5–$15 per trip

Total: $150 – $300 USD per person

Tip:
Splitting private transfers between two people makes them very cost-effective and far easier than public transport.

Tours & Activities

  • Saona Island day trip: $70–$120
  • Snorkelling / beach activities: $20–$50
  • Santo Domingo walking tours: $10–$30

Total: $120 – $250 USD per person

Tip:
Saona Island is the one tour worth prioritising—it’s a highlight of the trip.

Extras (These often overlooked costs can add up)

  • Tips & service charges: $50–$100
  • Souvenirs/shopping: $50–$150
  • Coffee, snacks, small extras: $50–$100

Total: $150 – $300 USD per person

Total Estimated Cost (10 Days)

Per Person (Mid-Range): $1,200 – $2,600 USD

Per Couple: $2,400 – $5,200 USD

Is the Dominican Republic Expensive?

Compared to other Caribbean destinations, the Dominican Republic offers excellent value, especially once you leave resort areas like Punta Cana.

  • Resorts = higher cost but convenience
  • Bayahibe = best value + authentic vibe
  • Santo Domingo = cheapest + most cultural

How to Save Money (Without Sacrificing Experience)

  • Stay fewer nights in Punta Cana (this is the most expensive area)
  • Base yourself longer in Bayahibe
  • Book tours in advance for better prices + availability
  • Use Uber in Santo Domingo instead of taxis

A 10-day Dominican Republic itinerary doesn’t have to be ultra-expensive. With the right mix of resort comfort, local stays and carefully chosen tours you can have an incredible Caribbean trip at a very reasonable price point

Best Time To Visit

The best time to visit Dominican Republic is December to April for warm, dry weather which is ideal for spending days on the beach, island day trips and city exploration. Avoid August to November which is the worst of the hurricane season.

Is The Dominican Republic Safe?

We found the Dominican Republic to feel quite safe. Punta Cana was super touristic which can attract a higher risk of pick pockets. We always recommend your usual safety precautions such as knowing where you are, take a bus or share transport if possible and keep an eye on your belongings.

Bayahibe felt really safe, there were lots of police and tourist police there keeping an eye on the town. We really felt like the local vibe was great.

Santa Domingo was bigger and the Zona Historica is the safest part of it. If you are venturing outside of that area then I would be far more vigilant about safety.

Mistakes To Avoid For Dominican Republic

Some of the most common mistakes that people make when coming to the Dominican Republic are:

  1. Only staying in Punta Cana! This is the biggest mistake we hear people making. The island has so much more to offer and we can’t wait to come back and explore it even further.
  2. Skipping Bayahibe – Bayahibe was our favourite place in the Dominican Republic and we would go back again. It has the perfect mix of relaxed local vibe and great beaches.
  3. Not booking Saona Island early – This is the best day trip to do in the Dominican Republic and booking early means you don’t miss out on your preferred day.
  4. Underestimating travel time – The Dominican Republic is quite big and getting between towns can be time consuming, we have detailed the best ways to get around the Dominican Republic in our posts on Punta Cana, Bayahibe and Santo Domingo.

Alternative Itineraries

7 Day Dominican Republic Itinerary

For 7 days in the Dominican Republic you will need to cut out either Punta Cana or Santo Domingo. This will depend if you are just visiting for a beach holiday then I would cut out Santo Domingo. Alternatively if you want to mix in some history and culture then cut out Punta Cana and go straight from the Punta Cana Airport to Bayahibe then on to Santo Domingo.

14 Day Dominican Republic Itinerary

With 14 days in the Dominican Republic you can add in more beach relaxation days and extra excursions! We love having more time to really soak up a destination, add extra days to each location depending on where you want to spend more time. I would definitely give Santo Domingo an extra day!

The Dominican Republic is a vibrant country full of beautiful scenery, history and culture so much so that we already want to return. If you love countries that feel like you really get to soak up the vibe then you will love the Dominican Republic.
