The Caribbean can feel overwhelming with over 700 islands, loads of countries and endless itinerary options. Choosing which islands to visit and whether to travel by land or cruise becomes confusing and it is easy to make expensive mistakes.

We have designed this itinerary to help you organise your trip with an exact route, realistic pacing, costs and the perfect mix of beaches and culture. We spent weeks travelling through Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Bahamas and multiple Caribbean islands by both cruise and independent travel to create a realistic itinerary that actually works.

This route is ideal for first-time Caribbean travellers wanting a mix of beaches, culture, nightlife and relaxed island travel without rushing between destinations.

How This Caribbean Itinerary Is Structured

This itinerary is based on a manageable travel pace rather than rushed island hopping. We combined cruises and land travel as we think the cruises we chose were the best value way to see the areas. The cruise took us to harder and more expensive to reach islands. We chose Puerto Rico as a starting point because it is already in the area that we want to explore, no wasted time in getting into the Caribbean. Miami makes an efficient hub as it is close and there are lots of flights through there each day making it an affordable and easy option. We selected to explore the Dominican Republic and Jamaica together as they are close in distance and the direct flight was quick.

Why This Is The Perfect First Caribbean Itinerary

Our itinerary is the perfect way to explore the Caribbean for the first time. It makes an overwhelming task very easy. You will get a taste of multiple Caribbean destinations with pacing that is manageable and perfect for first time travellers to the region. This itinerary has a great mix of cruise and independent travel which is the perfect combination to experience a wide range of locations and travel styles. By mixing travel styles and moderate pacing you will avoid burnout, utilise easy flight routes and get good value for your money.

How Many Days Do You Need In The Caribbean?

The Caribbean is a large region so it does depend on how much of it you want to cover. You could spend anywhere from 1 week to 1 month here.

1 Week Caribbean Itinerary

In one week you could do a Virgin Voyages Caribbean Cruise and see multiple islands. This is a really good use of the time if you want variety. If you prefer independent travel then choose one destination and explore it. I would choose the Dominican Republic for a great mix of beaches, resorts and culture. It is also an easy introduction to travel in the region. The timing I would use is 2 days in Punta Cana → 3 days in Bayahibe → 2 days in Santo Domingo.

2 Week Caribbean Itinerary (alternate options)

With 2 weeks in the Caribbean you could do a cruise and an independent location or two independently travelled locations. These are the timings I would use:

Option 1 – Week 1 Cruise from Puerto Rico to multiple islands → then Dominican Republic as above.

Option 2 – Week 1 in Dominican Republic (2 days in Punta Cana → 3 days in Bayahibe → 2 days in Santo Domingo) and Week 2 in Jamaica (2 days in Kingston → 4 days in Negril → 1 day in Montego Bay if needed for transit or fly straight out and use that day for Negril).

3 Week Caribbean Itinerary (alternate options)

3 weeks in the Caribbean will allow you to really explore the region you could do a cruise and an independent location or three independently travelled locations. These are the timings I would use:

Option 1 – Week 1 Cruise from Puerto Rico to multiple islands → then Dominican Republic → Jamaica (both as above)

Option 2 – Week 1 spend 3 days in Puerto Rico exploring Old San Juan and then fly to the Dominican Republic (2 days in Punta Cana → 3 days in Bayahibe → 2 days in Santo Domingo). Next up fly to Jamaica (2 days in Kingston → 4 days in Negril → 1 day in Montego Bay if needed for transit or fly straight out and use that day for Negril). After Jamaica fly to Miami to spend a day before joining a 3 day MSC cruise to the Bahamas, it is super cheap and fun.

1 month Caribbean Itinerary (alternate options)

1 month in the Caribbean is an excellent amount to explore the region. This is my ideal 1 month itinerary for the Caribbean.

Puerto Rico → Cruise from Puerto Rico to multiple islands → Dominican Republic → Jamaica → Miami → Bahamas Cruise → Curacao → Aruba

If you prefer not to cruise then I would spend longer in each destination and get to explore in a more relaxed manner while at each location.

Why This Caribbean Itinerary Works

Our Caribbean itinerary works because it has the perfect mix of cruise and independent travel, balancing multiple islands without burnout. This itinerary avoids the overly touristed resort traps and includes culture, beaches and nightlife. There are affordable flight routes via Miami and we use realistic timing without being rushed. We also chose destinations where we could travel on direct flights that were not too long between destinations to maximise our time at each location.

Our Exact Journey

This is our exact journey around the Caribbean and everywhere we went in order. We chose this as the flow is great with limited back tracking, shorter direct flights are possible and not too expensive.

Stop 1: Puerto Rico

We start this itinerary in Puerto Rico. One of the easiest Caribbean islands to get to and part of the USA so no visa is needed for Americans. Spend your time in Old San Juan, walking the streets full of colourful architecture and cafes. Check out the two forts and nearby beaches. San Juan has an excellent port and is incredibly convenient for a cruise departure destination. We chose to start our trip here as we would already be in the Caribbean and therefore not waste any time getting to the area.

Check out our full itinerary and guide for Old San Juan, it will help you plan your time there.

Cruise Segment 1: Virgin Voyages Caribbean Cruise

Next up we went on a Virgin Voyages cruise as they offer an adults-only, all-inclusive cruise experience. We chose to add in a cruise here so that we could reach as many of the islands as possible without having to fly to each and arrange transport. The prices of the flights and logistics add up very quickly here, so this was the perfect solution.

We really wanted to try out the cruising lifestyle as we hadn’t done one yet and the route we chose was perfect! We visited Martinique, Tortola, Antigua, Barbados, St Maarten. The value compared to independent island hopping was really good. The rooms are so well set up and modern and the food options are of high quality. We loved the restaurants and the entertainment, there was just so much on offer.

kelly and mike on a caribbean cruise with virgin voyages

The route was excellent, we chose one that went to the smaller Caribbean islands that were more expensive to fly into and get around. This only increased the value of the cruise to us.

Check out our cruise with Virgin Voyages to see the destinations we visited. You can also book with our code there is no extra cost to you but if you haven’t sailed with Virgin Voyages before, confirm your details and book a new voyage, you’ll get $150 in free drinks to purchase specialty beverages on your cruise!

Stop 2: Dominican Republic

Our next stop was the Dominican Republic, home to beautiful beaches and the oldest European established city in the Americas.

Punta Cana

Our first destination was to the beach and resort town of Punta Cana. It is known as a highly touristed area and this is certainly true. There are loads of beach resorts here and most of the sand is taken up by hotel sun-beds. There is a lot of tourist infrastructure here so you will be able to get around and use facilities easily.

Our full Punta Cana Guide will tell you everything you need to know to plan your perfect stay.

Bayahibe

Bayahibe is a smaller beach town and a much quieter alternative when compared to Punta Cana. It is a relaxed town with a great local vibe, and excellent access to Saona Island day trips. It is also much better value than Punta Cana. Check out our Bayahibe Guide which details all the best things to do here and why you have to visit.

👉 Check prices for beachfront hotels in Bayahibe here

Santo Domingo

Santo Domingo is the cultural heart of the Dominican Republic. Here you can explore the oldest European settled city in the Americas and its pretty zona colonial centre. The food and cafe scene here is thriving and there are some day trips you can do to further the experience. Compared to Punta Cana and Bayahibe it is a big city but has a historic centre that you shouldn’t miss.

Tip – Our Santo Domingo itinerary shows you what you can do if visiting by land or on a port day.

Stop 3: Jamaica

Adding Jamaica to this itinerary just made sense. Firstly it is an iconic Caribbean country and secondly it is perfectly located near the Dominican Republic that the direct flight is only about 2 hours. We explored Kingston, Negril and Montego Bay for their beaches and culture.

Kingston

In Kingston we stayed 3 days and went around the city to see the main attractions such as Trench Town, Bob Marley Museum, Emancipation Park, House, the local life and street art. We spent time at a local music venue and loved the vibes. Kingston is full of life and it was a great introduction to the city.

Our full Kingston Itinerary will show you how to spend 2 incredible days in the city.

Negril

This was our favourite stop in Jamaica and one that we highly recommend. Here time stands still while you spend your days on the most stunning beaches and soaking up the sun. The vibe is relaxed and there is a full range of accommodation from high end resorts to local stays. Head to the cliff area to watch the cliff jumping and sip cocktails while the sun sets.

We have written a complete guide to Negril so you can plan your next vacation!

Montego Bay

We spent a day walking around Montego Bay before flying out. It was interesting to visit the local points of interest and you can visit some nice beach clubs here for the day also. Check out our guide on Montego Bay to have your itinerary ready to go.

Stop 4: Miami (Transit + Experience Hub)

We went to Miami for a very short stop to transit through to our second cruise. We spent our time here walking the cool South Beach area, stunning beach and soaking up the retro architecture. Our hotel was right in the centre of South Beach and it was a very quick Uber to the cruise terminal in the morning.

👉 Our Miami South Beach guide has everything we did on our stopover in South Beach.

Cruise Segment 2: MSC Bahamas Cruise

From Miami’s South Beach we jumped on an MSC cruise to the Bahamas. It was 3 days of fun and a cheap way to experience the Bahamas. Rather than flying to the Bahamas and then getting transport and accommodation we were able to get a cheap little trip that was incredibly convenient and great value when compared to independent travel.

How We Travelled Between Caribbean Islands

We used a few different ways to get between the Caribbean Islands, this is why we chose each particular option.

Flights

We used flights where independent travel was better. We island hopped between the Caribbean Islands of Puerto Rico → Dominican Republic, DR → Jamaica and Jamaica → back to Miami. This was because these destinations were more independent travel friendly and these routes had affordable, shorter direct flights available. In each location we landed at one side of the island and travelled through, leaving at the other side, eg. arrived at Punta Cana and left from Santo Domingo.

The average flight times were about 2 hours direct, we did not choose any connecting flights as they waste time and we wanted to maximise our time in each location. Miami was a great hub to work from as it is close by and there are a lot of international flights in and out each day.

Cruises

We used cruises where they suited the schedule best. The Virgin Voyage cruise is great to see multiple islands without having to organise separate flights, transport and accommodation for short periods on each island. You get to visit each, see as much as possible and have all of the logistics organised. This worked best for these smaller destinations that are close together but expensive to fly between.

How Much Our Caribbean Trip Cost

Our Caribbean trip cost us approximately $5,000 USD per person for 3 weeks of midrange travel. This is our approximate breakdown, per person:

  • flights ~$500 USD
  • cruises ~ $1,300 USD
  • accommodation ~ $1500 USD
  • food between ~ $800 – $900 USD
  • tours ~$600 USD
  • transport ~$400 USD

Approximate budget ranges would be:

  • budget range ~$3,000 (hostel accommodation, public transport, inner cruise rooms, street food, cheaper group tours)
  • mid-range estimate ~$5,000 – $6,000 (quality accommodation, public & private transport, balcony cruise rooms, street & restaurant food, group tours)
  • luxury comparison ~$15,000 USD (luxury accommodation, private transport, luxury cruise rooms, restaurants and bars food, private tours)

Best Way To Travel The Caribbean

There are a few ways to travel the Caribbean and the best for you will depend on your preferences. The main options are cruising vs independent travel. With cruising everything is provided for you, transport, food and accommodation.

If you are going to fly to each destination this can add up for the smaller and more expensive islands. There are limited ferry routes between many islands. While flights are fast they are expensive as is accommodation.

Ultimately, cruising makes sense when your destinations are the smaller more expensive islands. Independent travel is best for the larger islands with a variety of options in transport and accommodation.

Cruise vs Land Travel

We actually loved cruising, it was such a convenient way to travel and had a lot to offer. There is something so nice about having all the day to day decisions be made for you, there is no accommodation concern, no pack up and move town day and there is an array of delicious food options readily available to you.

How Expensive Is Caribbean Island Hopping?

Caribbean island hopping can add up quickly as there are many different islands to go in and out of. You also need to factor in not just the flights but the transport to and from airports, accommodation and food. Accommodation especially can vary widely between locations. The smaller islands in the Caribbean are more expensive to travel in and between which is why a cruise can reduce the cost and still get you to these locations. Instead of worrying about flying in, checking in and transit times you can just disembark and go explore. We loved this aspect.

Island hopping Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic were more affordable options. They represent great value and have really interesting histories and locations to visit. Flights are affordable and there is a big range of accommodation. These are destinations where flying in is worth it.

Average Caribbean Flight Costs

Caribbean flights can range from really expensive to really affordable, it just depends on where you are flying and the time of year. These are prices we paid for our flights:

  • Puerto Rico → Dominican Republic: ~$80–$150 USD
  • Santo Domingo → Kingston: ~$120–$250USD
  • Jamaica → Miami: ~$100–$220USD

If we had flown between the smaller islands instead of taking the Virgin Voyages cruise it would have totalled ~ $1900 alone for just flights.

Best Things We Did

We had a lot of ‘best moments’ on this itinerary but our overall favourite things were:

Saona Island tour – This tour was such a wonderful mix of stunning beaches and education. We got to experience the local life of the island, eat a locally prepared lunch on the beach and laze around on perfect sand with bright blue water lapping at our feet. It felt like a dream.

Virgin Voyages Cruise – What a fun experience this was! We had never cruised before and now we can’t wait for our next one. We loved the quality of the food and cabins but also the excellent itinerary that got us to some of the more expensive Caribbean islands, this made visiting these locations better value and more time effective than trying to do it on our own.

Old San Juan walking tour – This tour was by a local lady who really explained not only the cuisine of Puerto Rico but the history of the city and island. We learnt about the culture which gave us a stronger connection to the city.

Negril beaches – Negril may just have the best beaches we have been to anywhere ever. The water is next level perfectly blue and crystal clear. The sand is light and soft. The beach goes on for ever and you can walk for miles. There are resorts, affordable accommodation and lots of bars and restaurants. The vibe is good and the beach is better.

Exploring Kingston – Kingston was a surprise. I wasn’t expecting to enjoy exploring it as much as I did. There are lots of sights to see, the people are friendly and full of character and the music scene is awesome. Definitely somewhere you have to just go and experience for yourself.

Ocean Cay – This is one of the prettiest places we visited on the trip. Ocean Cay is the MSC Cruise private island. It was once almost ruined by sand mining until MSC bought and rehabilitated it, now it is a sparkling jewel in the Caribbean and so worth visiting.

What We Would Change Next Time

If we could redo this trip we would spend longer in Bayahibe and a little less time in Punta Cana. In Punta Cana we would try out staying in a beach resort as I think the experience would be more enjoyable being right on the beach.

Mistakes To Avoid

Some common mistakes that people make when visiting the Caribbean is overpacking their itinerary. There’s a lot to see and it is so tempting to fill up everyday, but there is also nothing worse than the exhaustion of packing up and moving towns everyday.

Staying only at resorts and not getting out to experience the actual destination. Resorts are amazing and you can totally relax but keep some destinations for exploring the country and experiencing the culture.

Booking tours or cruises at the last minute. Booking early will make sure you can go on the tour on the date and time you want. Leaving it too late will mean most tours will be booked out, or the price can go up.

Travel transit time has to be a consideration. Even if the distances between locations don’t seem like they are very long, it can take more time than expected. Road conditions, traffic and the quality of the vehicle all contribute to extended transit times that take away from the time you have in the destination.

Miami is an excellent hub, there are loads of international flights from here which makes it easier to get around. We came into Miami and took a quick cruise before flying out again, the city is easy to transfer around and well set up for a layover.

Best Caribbean Destinations for Different Travellers

Want to prioritise your time to the type of traveller you are? These are the best destinations for different travellers:

  • beaches → Negril
  • luxury → Punta Cana
  • culture → Santo Domingo
  • nightlife → San Juan
  • couples → Antigua
  • first timers → Puerto Rico
  • budget travellers → Dominican Republic
  • quiet escapes → Bayahibe

Who This Itinerary Is Best For

This itinerary would suit most travellers but it is particularly perfect for:

  • first Caribbean trip
  • couples
  • cruise-curious travellers
  • beach lovers
  • culture + beach mix
  • mid-range travellers

This is the itinerary that we wished we had when we were planning our trip.

Who This Caribbean Itinerary May Not Suit

This itinerary is designed for travellers that want a variety of destinations and moderate paced travel. If you prefer slow travel, spending weeks in one location I would choose one or two islands to focus my time.

Best Time To Visit Caribbean

The best months for beaches in the Caribbean are January to April for good visibility and warm sunny days. May to mid June are a bit of a shoulder season where you may get a few rainy days but will have quieter crowds.

The dry season is mid December to April and this is the absolute peak for tourism. Days filled with sunshine, perfect water, however prices and crowds will be at their maximum.

Cruise season timing is really important because you are buying a package that can’t be altered. December to mid-April are the peak weather for sailing. The water and weather is the calmest which means less seasickness. We went on our cruise with Virgin Voyages mid February and it was perfect weather! Neither of us usually get seasick however we couldn’t even tell we were sailing it was so smooth.

The season I would absolutely avoid is the hurricane season. The peak is mid August to October with September usually being the worst of it. The prices will be much cheaper and crowds much lower but for me it is not worth it. If you do need to travel in the Caribbean during this season then I would focus on the Caribbean islands of the ABC Islands – Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao. We visited Aruba and Curacao and loved both of them. They are below the hurricane belt and usually are at a very low weather risk year round.

FAQ Section

Is 3 weeks enough for the Caribbean?

3 weeks is enough to explore the Caribbean with a nice mix of cruising and independent travel. You will experience everything from stunning beaches to cities full of culture.

What is the best Caribbean itinerary?

Our Caribbean itinerary is the best way to see as much of the area as possible while not rushing. It is the perfect itinerary for first time visitors to the Caribbean.

Is island hopping easy?

Island hopping is easy but not cheap. There are some islands that are very expensive to fly into and are also expensive to visit. Independent travel is best here if it is slower so you have time to move. A cruise is a great alternative to flying between the smaller islands as you get time to explore and the rest of the expenses are included in the cruise.

What is the cheapest way to travel Caribbean?

This depends on the type of traveller you are, sometimes a cruise is the cheaper option because each individual flight, transfers and accommodation starts to add up, especially when there are so many locations to travel to.

Is the Caribbean safe for tourists?

Yes, in general the Caribbean is a safe destination for tourists but it does vary by island. The main concern is petty theft and scams. Always use your travel safety precautions and common sense.

Cruise vs flying Caribbean islands?

Cruising is the easiest option and sometimes more affordable as a group of islands are included in the package along with food, transport and accommodation. Flying can add up depending on how many and which islands you are visiting.

Best Caribbean islands for first timers?

The best islands in the Caribbean for first time visitors would be Puerto Rico, Aruba and Curacao.

Final Verdict

The Caribbean is a dream destination for many, and after spending weeks travelling through the region, we completely understand why. From the sparkling beaches and vibrant cultural centres to the excitement of waking up in a new destination during our cruises, every part of this trip felt unforgettable. What surprised us most was how achievable and affordable Caribbean island hopping became once we combined cruises with independent travel.

While planning a Caribbean itinerary can feel overwhelming, following our realistic route makes a huge difference. By using this itinerary, you will experience the perfect balance of beaches, culture, nightlife and adventure without rushing between destinations. We carefully planned these timings based on our own experience so you can maximise your time and avoid the common travel mistakes that make Caribbean trips stressful. We loved our time in the Caribbean and hope this guide helps you plan your dream trip.
