Gluten free Belize

Belize was a pretty good gluten free destination. Lots of the food was naturally gf which made it easy. I usually try to eat locally as I want to experience the destination I am in. This can be difficult but in Belize it really wasn’t that hard…once I found my favourite food!

My favourite meal in Belize

My favourite thing to eat were the stew chicken and I ate it at lunch and dinner most days.

It’s chicken stewed in local spices which can be slightly different depending on the cook. It’s served with salad, usually potato. beans and rice. I lived off this dish, luckily it was really good!

There’s lots of other stewed options served with rice, you’ll find pork and beef regularly.

The fruit is really good! You’ll find little market stalls selling the best pineapples, bananas and mangos! Take advantage of this, they’ll usually cut it up for you too.

Do not eat-

Sadly fry jacks are NOT gluten free and I never found anyone making them from corn.

Where to eat gluten free on Caye Caulker?

Coffee – Get coffee at Ice and Beans. It is the best! They also have gluten free bread and breakfast options.

We found our favourite place to eat at Martinez Takeaway. It is a hole in the wall window where you order your meal. It will be given to you takeaway and they have benches to eat at near the water. Just look out for the yellow bench tables.

We are their stew chicken which is a local Belizean dish. It was 8BZD and completely delicious! Highly recommend this one. It closes at 2pm everyday and is closed on Mondays.

I also ate at Aunties which was good. The stew chicken was 9BZD. You can eat at their table inside or takeaway.

Mini markets- The best were Prime, Enjoy and Amigos mini markets. All similar pricing and quality. There is a larger supermarket in the back of town but it’s not much different in price or offerings.

There are loads of guys cooking up jerk chicken, corn and rice on the street who all told me there was no flours in their seasoning. I didn’t try it but it smells amazing. This is our Caye Caulker blog which has the details of what you should do there!

Epic sailing adventure with gluten free food

We took a 3 day/2 night sailing trip from Caye Caulker with Ragga Sailing Adventures and they catered for my coeliac needs to perfection. I was always looked after by Chef Linton so well that I was never once concerned about what I could eat. It was a wonderful experience that I highly recommend. We loved this so much and for 3 days I didn’t have to worry about if the food was safe and had an incredible adventure! Check out our blog on our Ragga Sailing Adventure experience.

Where to eat gluten free in Hopkins?

Hopkins is really tiny! There’s a couple of mini markets, we went to FiWe Mart. There’s loads of fruit stalls which is always a staple.

Best gluten free restaurant in Belize!

The absolute best place to eat for a coeliac in Belize., made better by staying there is the incredible Lodge at Jaguar Reef. They really looked after me, helping me work out what I could order. Their staff are so accommodating and kind.

I ate every meal at their restaurant The Paddle House which was such a high quality and in the prettiest beachfront setting. I fully recommend staying at The Lodge at Jaguar Reef as it is the best hotel we stayed at in Belize, it was truly a gem that we can’t wait to come back and visit again soon.

Gluten free breakfast in Belize

For breakfast I had The Village Breakfast replacing the fry jacks with corn tortillas. The scrambled eggs were seasoned perfectly and the bacon was thick and tasty. I loved the refried beans in the side, it was something I really started to enjoy at each meal! Their coffee is yummy, I loved the cappuccino frappe.

Gluten free lunch in Belize

At lunch I tried the baby back ribs and oh my gosh it was divine! Tender and tasty I thoroughly enjoyed this meal, served with coconut rice.

Gluten free dinner in Belize

For dinner I tried a chickpea and tomato appetiser. I wasn’t sure what to expect but what I tasted was the creamiest, most delicious starter! Full of tangy tomatoes and creamy chickpeas I wish I could have the recipe from the chef! It was truly a delight. For my main I chose the beef tenderloin. It was melt in your mouth delicious! Served with potato and a tasty jus which complemented it perfectly.

Desserts were a hard choice as they all sounded amazing! I had the coconut flan with sweet glaze and a pineapple panna cotta. Both were so yummy and the best way to end my meal.

Gluten free pizza in Belize

The also have Don Tonitos Pizza onsite at their pool bar. They made me a gluten free pizza from cassava flour! It was my first pizza in ages. They were so sweet making sure it was created carefully. They just need it ordered with at least 3 hours notice to make it from scratch!

I can’t recommend staying at The Lodge at Jaguar Reef and dining at the Paddle House more! Our stay was nothing short of magical and our dining experience was scrumptious with excellent service. I only wish I could have stayed longer to have tried every option on the menu! This was a big highlight of our time in Belize and I already long to return.

If you would like to see our full review of our time here I have written a blog to detail our stay at The Lodge at Jaguar Reef.

Where to eat gluten free in San Ignacio?

We were in San Ignacio only briefly but we found an excellent little restaurant called Cenaida’s Belizean Food. Owned by the loveliest people this is a great restaurant. The prices are excellent and the stew chicken was possibly the best we ate. The price was 8BZD, served with a salad of the day, beans and rice or fries.

There is a Western Dairies restaurant in town which is great for ice cream and breakfast. They do an egg and bean with corn tortilla breakfast for 7.50 BZD and scoops of ice cream are single scoop  2.25BZD or double for 3.75BZD. The chocolate, strawberry and mint choc chip were our favourites.

We also ate from Ds BBQ at the market, their stew chicken was great at 9BZD.

The best Mini market is Trang and son. There is another highly rated restaurant called Han nah but it is quite expensive.
